Kopi Roti Love!

By

Set D: 4 pcs. Home Made “Roti” Kaya Toast with Kopi or Tea (P85)

I love Kaya Toast! It was on my top 10 favorite Singapore food (see Makan Food Trip – My Top 10 Favorites! ). That’s why I was pleasantly surprised that it is now available in Manila via the mushrooming Kopi Roti Stores all over Metro Manila. It is not exactly the same, but it is close enough that you don’t need to fly to Singapore to try it out. I’m sure the novelty will wear out, but at least if you haven’t tried Kopi Roti, you’ve been missing on one of the best foreign coffee shop that arrived in Manila since Starbucks. In Lori’s recent post Singapore So Good, Lah! , she raves above Kaya Toast:

“I’ve made it my mission while in Singapore to try kaya toast. I came across it in some food blog a few weeks before, and I’m hooked. In itself, kaya is a jam made from coconut milk, eggs, sugar, and flavored with pandan. It’s thick and a gentle green, reminding me of a milder version of our local coco jam. Spread on bread that’s toasted over a charcoal grill and then topped with a thick lashing of cold butter, it’s a traditional Singaporean breakfast eaten with soft-boiled eggs washed down with hot, strong kopi (coffee) that’s been roasted with corn and lashed with condensed milk. A perfect perk-me-up.” by Lori of dessertscomefirst,

The only thing is that I miss buying the bottle of Kaya so that you can enjoy your own Kaya toast at home. I asked Kopi Roti if they sell Kaya, unfortunately they don’t. Hmmn, maybe Lori can bring some bottles of Kaya from Ya Kun back in the Philippines as a pasalubong…. hint, hint 🙂

Set E: Kopi Bun with Kopi or Tea (P75)

I’m not sure why they are promoting Kopi Bun instead of the Kaya Toast. Actually, this is equally good. I like the crispy coffee crust on the outside and the inside is filled with a hollow opening filled with Kaya (it taste like it). The best part is, you can dip the big chunk of the kopi bun in the hot kopi with the condensed milk. The bun will absorb a good amount of the Kopi like a sponge so that you have enough time to put the kopi bun to your mouth before it drips. This is a lot lot better than the starbucks coffee experience if you ask me.

The Kopi/ Tea are very good! I’m not a coffee addict so I cannot describe how good it is. I can just describe that after drinking the coffee with the condensed milk, you would say “Damn, this coffee is really good. ” You have three versions: the Kopi (or tea) with Milk, Kopi with “C” and Kopi with “O” . Here is a translation table:

Kopi/ Tea with Milk (P45) = Kopi/Tea with Condensed Milk (Must Try!!)
Kopi/Tea with “C” (P45) = Kopi/Tea with Evaporated milk (so why not call it with “E”?)
Kopi/Tea with “O” (P40) = Kopi/Tea with no milk, just black.

Kopi Roti, Mall of Asia (South Wing) — Opens 7am daily.

Their biggest store is in Katipunan (if I’m not mistaken). There is also one along timog Avenue near Finio. Also, I recently seen them in the Airport terminals. We need to prepare ourselves for the invasion of this Singapore Breakfast favorite. Frankly, I don’t mind. I do hope they open in Makati very soon!

  1. i love kopi roti!!! eversince ive tried it ive rarely gone to seattle best and starbucks…kopi roti is truly value-for-money!!! even their set meal is way cheaper than starbucks mocha frapp or SBs javanilla
im just lucky i live near ther katips branch =)…kahit nakapambahay i can go there
plus the owners are really nice =)

  2. I was wondering when you’d feature Kopi Roti! Love the kopi bun and kaya toast – and the kopi/tea with milk. I, too, wonder when they’ll have a Makati presence. Sooner rather than later, I hope. When we were in Bangkok, we tried some flavored kopi buns from a Thai chain, Mister Bun. Apart from the coffee flavor, there’s also strawberry and coconut. Strawberry was okay but I could hardly taste the coconut flavor in the coconut variant. The branch we went to is in the basement of Platinum Mall, across from the Amari Watergate Hotel.

  3. I agree with Ana. The kaya spread in Singapore literally “oozes” from the bun/ toast. Here you can barely taste the kaya. I hope the owners take notice and be more liberal with the kaya spread.

  4. there’s kaya toast in manila???? yipee!!!! i’ve been craving for it since i first tasted it at a recent trip in sg. thanks for the info!!! i’m salivating right now…

  5. I agree with everything others have said about the delish kopi bun (Anton, I think that’s butter inside, not kaya), the kaya toast lacking in kaya, and the need for a branch in Makati (emphasis on this last one!). So why am I just repeating what everyone’s already said? In the hopes that the owners see all the comments and take heed! 😉

  6. i regularly go to the katipunan branch and its always packed, which is a good sign i guess…i prefer the kopi bun over the kaya toast… hope they expand to alabang…hehehe

  7. If you like Singaporean food, try Palm Beach at Fort. Its just next to Le Souffle, Prince, etc. I had their Thai Sharksfin Soup which isnt in the menu and its really, really good. Better than most Hong Kong sharksfin soup and the serving is enough to fill you up. Also loved the baby squid appetizer and the prawn oats. Ate at Palm Beach in Singapore too but its just cheaper to eat it here. But by the number of people eating in the restaurant, Im guessing not a lot of people know about it. Also, check out Cavana in megamall side A near kaya and yoshinoya. Its cheap and good. You gotta order the rice meals. The hainanese chicken rice is yummy. And a rice meal is only P99. hahahah! now thats really value for money.

  8. You have to try the Roti buns at Michelle’s Bakeshop at SM City Clark. It tastes very much like the roti in Kuala Lumpur. Kopi Roti’s is poor in taste compared to the ones at Michelle’s. The only thing is you’ll be very lucky if you’ll be able to grab one. It’s always sold out once it’s baked. There’s always a line for it as soon as it’s out of their ovens and most often than not, it won’t be enough for everyone in line.

  9. I’ve been to Singapore many times and i am soo soo glad that Kopiroti is in Manila!
I looooove the kaya toast and the freshly brewed coffee.I hope they will expand in Ortigas area.

  10. Roti Mum is sooooooooo delicious. Sorry to say but after trying Rotimum, the rest tasted like ordinary bread. I surely agree with the Singaporean there that its singapore’s best.

  11. RotiMum in SM Megamall is sooooooooo delicious. Sorry to say but after trying Rotimum, the rest tasted like ordinary bread. I surely agree that it is singapore’s best.

  12. Yeah!!! RotiMum in SM Megamall is really good. And its terrific to see how they make it in front of you. The BEST COFFEE BUN that I have ever tasted so far. RotiMum is perfect!!! Actually after buying 1, I brought home a dozen hahaha. Everyone should try it.

I can relate to most of the places you went and visited because I love goin places, discovering cuisines…
I must say, I recommend Korean restos near La salle taft,
the ambiance is residential, it’s inside the 3 floors of Korean owner. Good food! So delicious, it comes with big servings and reasonable price.

  17. I heard that Trinoma has a store that sells only kopi buns. BUT! It’s not Kopi Roti. I just don’t what particular store that is.

  18. I love kopi bun when I was still in Manila…I didnt realize it costs 75 now for kopi bun and tea? whew! have i been gone that long?

  19. Kopi/Tea with “C” (P45) = Kopi/Tea with Evaporated milk (so why not call it with “E”?)
–>Reason why it’s called Kopi-C is because it was originally mixed with Carnation’s evap 🙂 thus the term C.

  20. I WAS a fan of kopirotti as I especially loved their tea. However, my last visit annoyed the hell out of me. It wasn’t the food that made me vow not to go back to Kopirotti (Blue ridge branch), but their irresponsible management. The staff apparently had left wet paint on the side of the counter parallel to where the customers would stand to take their orders. There were NO cautionary signs or warnings from the staff. And the corridor being so narrow, it was inevitable for anyone to bump into the painted area of the counter. I was wearing my favorite newly bought black pants then. And the paint was white. So much for customer care.
