The MV Doulos is the world’s oldest active ocean-faring passenger ship since 1914. She is now owned by the German charity Gute Bücher für Alle (Good Books for All), and is used as a floating bookshop. We are privileged to welcome her back to Manila shores; she is parked in South Harbor Manila Pier 13 (at the back of Manila hotel) from Jan. 5 to 22, 2007. It was named “Doulos” in 1977 and it is a Greek word for “servant”. All the international crew – from the captain to the cooks – serve as volunteers. The opening hours are 10am-10pm Tuesday-Saturday, and 2pm-10pm on Sunday and Monday. (Official Website of Doulos)
It was an interesting ship which have a huge collection of Children’s books, Christian life books and music, Healthy Cook Books and General Health/ Well-being. Most of the books came from UK as I was told by the interesting crew. The pricing of the goods are in international units. Fortunately, the conversion of 100 units is an easy conversion to 100 pesos. My wife find the books expensive relatively but they are unique which justifies the premium. If you are into Christian Songs, I saw an extensive collection of Hill songs and other Christian artist.
You should visit Doulos to check out the books, or get an experience to board one of the world’s oldest ocean-going passenger ship. Once you are onboard, interact with the interesting Christian international crew. Let me give you a sneak peak at the M/V Doulos, the floating bookstore….
P10 Entrance Fee is quite cheap. This is a good place to bring your kids too.
This is an open air bookstore. I find it kinda hot inside despite the fans and the winds don’t pass through. Some find the smell of the Doulos disgusting but I was not offended by its smell.

A coffee and ice cream stall that sells ice cream for P30. Nothing special.
This is the only book I purchased. My wife was not impressed with the book collection.
There is a bargain books place but still we were not able to buy anything.

I have always visited the bookshop whenever it docks in Manila but yes, this year’s books were not as varied as the previous. The crew told me, most of the stocks were sold out when they were in Singapore then in Bacolod. They are expecting book deliveries anytime. For the first 2 days there were must have books, which were gone by the weekend. You should have emailed me back, I could have set a tour for you and family.

I also went to Doulos and I also blog. I agree that the book selection was lousy and some smells were funky. And if you say the coffee and ice cream weren’t great, why even blog about it at all?
it is a good gimmick for kids to board a ship and it is interesting to check out how the oldest passenger ship would look like. Also the crew is nice and I was hoping to get a tour one of these days, if possible and interact with the crew.

i was able to visit mv doulos before and i do have fun strolling around the ship and i was able to buy some books as well.
i grew up and accepted the Lord as my personal Lord and saviour in manila, but God is now using me in His growing church here in mindoro-as Youth Leader.
upon hearing that doulos is here in the philippines, the first thing that came in my mind is, i’ll bring my Youth to visit doulos.

yep! it’s nov 29 to dec 23, i read it today at manila bulletin… i havent been theree yet but im hoping i can get there before it boarded off! i hope someone can tell me how to get there by means of commuting! thanks and God bless!
