I think I finally found the best pastillas in Manila. Christine of Ramblings from a Gypsy Soul brought these Jumbo Pastillas during Poch’s despedida dip party and we immediately got hooked! Christine was also responsible for my Sonja’s cupcakes addiction way before it opened in Serendra. I finally succumbed to these Jumbo Pastillas temptation and we had to buy two boxes to satisfy our soon-to-be pastillas addiction. Finally, this might be the Best Pastillas in Manila!
Pastillas is one of those that conjured up childhood memories similar to our all time favorite chocnut. It was sad that it became a commodity and for a time, it was satisfied being sold in a generic unbranded cardboard box decreasing in size over time. Iya’s Jumbo Pastillas decided to revive its lost glory starting with a maroon cow inspired box perfect for giving it as a gift or satisfying the most requested pasalubong of balikbayans in other countries. The pastillas of our childhood days is quite large and after seeing this 2.5 inches long jumbo pastillas (3.0 inches with the white cover), you would conclude that this the authentic pastillas. The actual pastillas itself is smooth, sweet and enough to make you forget how sinful it is.
We are in pastillas heaven now and my search for the ultimate pastillas is finally over. Not unless, some readers can share their own best pastillas secret. Let me know and maybe we can have a pastillas taste test. One box of Iya’s Jumbo Pastillas sells for P250 / box which contains 24 pastillas. Effectively, each one would cost P10.40 and I was wondering why not just add one more pastillas to simplify the computation into P10/ pastillas. I actually have no reference as to how much Sevilla’s pastillas would cost.
Aidan is now creating his own pastillas childhood memories and he looks at his mom for a nod of approval before devouring another pastillas. He now has a mental memory of how good these white japanese paper covered sweets that we hide even the photos of these pastillas or else, the two boxes would not be enough for the three of us!

A pastillas tasting party! whoohoo! I like the ones from Bulacan (we found this hole in the wall that sells great pastillas last year when we went to Cabanatuan. It’s near the Sevillas store, but I’d have to be on the road leading there to give you directions, you know me), and there are the ones from the carabao center in Nueva Ecija. The ones from Alice in Tarlac are good too. Then there are the ones that are super siksik and dried into long bars. And yes, the pastillas in a jar! Just a spoonful of sugar indeed.
Iya’s wins by sheer size, good flavor too.

I love pastillas but they are often very small. Sometimes the paper wrapping appears big but I often get dismayed because of the small content. Those jumbo pastillas certainly look interesting.

Bought a box at Rockwell today as a V day gift from my diabetic husband. There was a row of tables in the middle of the ground floor and I was looking for sugar free stuff. In the end, I splurged on these pastillas because my husband loves them and these will be total indulgence for him (He’s a Bulakeño and is yet to eat a pastillas as big as this). I wish Iya will make these more avaialble and accessible to a lot of people, especially those like me who don’t live in Makati.
Bought a box at Rockwell today as a V day gift from my diabetic husband. There was a row of tables in the middle of the ground floor and I was looking for sugar free stuff. Just an update. I think Iya’s pastillas quality is waning or maybe we just got a bad batch. A family friend visiting from US bought at Rockwell last Fri (Oct. 24) and didn’t like the original leche (not sure why… but he says it’s not great at all) so he requested to have it exchanged instead for the toasted one… which he took home for us to taste. It wasn’t that great either… I tasted a lot of flour and not much milk. It didn’t taste bad but it wasn’t great either… like how Iya’s pastillas was originally known. Hope it was just a bad batch.
Oh! I also love pastillas. It’s sweetness and milky taste is what I really crave for. My mom always added pastillas to my balikbayan box whenever she’s going to send it to me here in Canada.

Oh I love this discussion! Here’s my contribution:
1. My SIL brings home jumbo pastillas from Miggy’s in Alabang. Very good and better than Iya’s mainly because the latter is inconsistent (Lately, more on the not-as-good-as-before).
2. El Ideal’s (from Silay) pastillas de leche – These are the flat rectangle ones. Very rare to find these. El Ideal’s tastes exactly like the pastillas we all like but it’s chewier. More milky (and I don’t mean powdered milk milky) than sugar. Addictive!

4. Sevilla’s quality is back! Thank goodness! At their Greenhills store, the small sized pastillas cost php80. The jumbo (though not as big as Iya’s) cost php160 for 25 pieces.
