La Cabane and Ratatouille

La Cabane - 4

The plan was to watch Ratatouille together in Greenbelt 3 and eat in a French restaurant, La Cabane along Pasay Road. The perfect combination would have been Ratatouille and eat in Culliere, a French Patisserie in Serendra, which has Ratatouillein their menu. Ratatouille was fun except for that scene where Anton ego opened the kitchen and he saw all the rats cooking! There were stories of walk outs in New York because of this.

La Cabane is a restaurant in its second reincarnation as a french restaurant from its spanish/ moroccan past life. Chef Evie Perdrix’s French dishes are patronized by French people in Manila and allegedly, a French organization meets here regularly. A dining experience in La Cabane is described by Fash Pack as a “quiet evening” which is a novelty these days. But despite the great food, it was empty on a Saturday night. It was a waste to see a good lounge with throw pillows (pictured above) without any people drinking and enjoying the place. Every time I drive by, I see the place empty.

My theory is the place don’t have a good feng shui. Most people enjoy La Cabane because of good food and its quiet existence in the restaurant scene. I wouldn’t rave about the food because I don’t think it even close to Je Suis Gourmand. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy places like these that is quiet, clean, cozy, intimate and serves good food. I just don’t know how they will survive over time. For the meantime, it would be a secret place for us to enjoy a good dinner….

The canapes were on the house and surprisingly it has a good crust and contrasting ingredients.

La Cabane - 10
Mushroom Soup (145++). It has an “asim” / sour taste which I guess was fine for the mushroom soup.

La Cabane - 14
The menu selection was quite varied. I don’t like the design of the menu which is patterned after the bleached furniture of the resto.

Salads and Soup
Pasta
Fishes and Meat
Viandes and Specials
Desserts
plats du jour: Specials of the Day

La Cabane - 11
Couscous d’agneau (460++) Couscous – lamb – vegetables. I love couscous and this lamb stew was a perfect companion. The lamb was tender and the soup does not overpower the entire meal. Although for a P500 dish, I would have expected a lot better than this.

La Cabane - 12
Lapin Aux Olives (P480++) French Traditionnal, Rabbit, Olives, White wine. My wife ordered this. In an Anton Ego fashion, her mind went into a flashback of her childhood memories of being forced to eat native chicken by her parents. Maybe she was imagining she was eating Remy so she decided to let me finish him off…

La Cabane - 16
Tarte aux peaches (P120++) Peach Pie. They serve a lot of pies but the Black Cherry Pie was the runaway winner.

La Cabane - 15

It was not really a food trip per se and it was more of who-wants-to-watch Ratatouille kind of thing. The secret to a good dining experience is to have great company!

  1. LOL @ your rabbit steak comment, Anton!
My family and I loved Ratatoullie. Did you know that they had Thomas Keller (French Laundry Chef Extraordinaire) as their consultant? I also read in the movie’s official site that all the food shown in the movie was prepared, eaten and photographed beforehand. Animation has come a long way, huh?
By the way, I have a multiply site with pictures of some of my cupcakes ๐Ÿ™‚ http://thesweetlife.multiply.com Please do check it out when you have the time.

  2. Hi Anton,
Good review of La Cabane. I understand you’ve discovered Elbert’s Steakroom at Sagittarius Bldng in Makati? Im curious: what did you think of it? Didn’t you find it a little bit too expensive (after all you can get the same steaks at the Tivoli at the Mandarin or Red in Makati Shangri-la, etc. at about the same prices but in an absolutely more swanky ambiance as, I believe the Steakroom’s interiors aren’t finished yet?) Looking forward to your write-up/review of the place (Elbert’s Steakroom, that is)
Thanks, more power to you…and I wish you more culinary adventures. Happy eating (how do you say that in French, i wonder — just curious, haha!)

  3. It’s unfortunate that not a lot of people know about La Cabane. It’s a nice place to have a quiet dinner, and surprisingly, the prices are reasonable. I agree with you that the quality of their food doesn’t come close to Je Suis Gourmand’s, but it’s not bad at all.
By the way, I think you spelled RATATOUILLE wrong.

  4. salut anton!!
i love the sincere comments you provide :)’
i totally agree with you on this one!! ๐Ÿ™‚
