I’m surprised why Gasthof is not taking off well in Avenue in Makati. With a heritage of serving good baby back ribs in Boracay and a branch in Legaspi City, I would have thought Manila would welcome it with open arms. Gasthof is owned by a German with a Bicolana wife so expect a Filipino-German mix in the cuisine. I’ve been going back to Avenue for some time now to complete my AVenue series and Gasthof is nearly empty during Lunch time. Maybe because they are still constructing it, most people think it is close or the prices are too expensive. (What do you think? )

Baby Back Ribs Half Order (P450). The dish that started it all and became the all-time favorite of Boracay’s for local guests and tourists. Succulent pork back ribs marinated in our special Gasthof sauce.

The only reason I included Gasthof is that there are a lot of people of who love Gasthof ribs. You don’t have to go to Boracay to satisfy your craving. Although I heard lately that the Boracay branch is declining in popularity (not sure also what is the reason? any comment?).

Caesar’s Salad (P180). Crunchy Fresh Lettuce with grated Parmesan cheese, bacon bits, and croutons in Caesar’s dressing.
The salad serving is huge and can easily serve 3-4 people. Our salad was fresh and no complains about it.

Laing Pinangat (P120). I’ve been to Bicol and tasted really good pinangat. But this one failed my expectation because I’m looking for a more tastier and hotter version.

Like in any German restaurant, expect a deli where you can buy sausages and cheese!

  1. Hi Anton,
Were you able to meet Wolfgang and Bot Gersbach? They’re good friends of mine from when I was still managing a resort in Boracay.
I was surprised to read here that their new branch isn’t doing that well compared to the Boracay and Bicol outlets.
I guess they need to advertise a lot.

  2. hmmm… yeah i’m also kinda shocked that its not doing so well, since its manila-based fans are constantly raving about it after their bora trips. i myself am a fan of their ribs, but i’ve actually only eaten at the a.venue branch once and have not returned in months. must be one of those “summer flings”… you know, kinda like how grilled tilapia only tastes good if you’re eating it on a banana leaf at the beach?;-) but, yeah, could also be just poor marketing…

  3. About the Gasthof in Bora… I think people are getting tired of the bad service. Even during off-peak hours, it takes them waaay too long to serve the food. Given that their ribs are good, there are also tons of new restos (and pretty good ones at that) sprouting all over the island who can serve your food within 10-15 minutes. Unless you’re really craving for their ribs, there are just too many better options.

  4. I also love Gasthof in Borcaya but maybe it was just good in Boracay? It’s like the Idian resto in Bora, it’s really good but once you bring it over here in Manila, I don’t think it will be able to compete with Kashmir and New Bombay! Just my opinion

  5. Hmmm.. Maybe it’s because we have more choices here? 🙂 I myself have never been to the Makati branch, but I had the ribs about 6 times in the whole month I was in Boracay years ago. You can get a lot more for p450 in Manila. 🙂

  6. well…… there are more to choose from in manila. Besides, nobody really knows that Gasthof is already in A.Venue in Mkti Ave not unless you accidenttally pass by it. They should be a little more agressive in their marketing scheme.

  7. i guess its because of poor service, not by the staffs but specifically with the Manager 🙁
we visited there a few weeks back and our group was busy chitchatting while suddenly the Manager just pumped up the volume and we can no longer hear ourselves 🙁 why would the Manager do that …. it was so loud that even the people at the bar beside was looking to see whats going on 🙁
and so we just decided to leave and not stay there or else our eardrum will be damaged.

  8. oh I see… who’s yhe manager ba? Is it the daughter?? Isn’t she was a former Bb. Pilipinas International? Wow… I didn’t expect that their service is like that.. Me and my friends are trying to visit pa naman their place…

  9. bot has sold the boracay and lucena branches. as to the A.Venue branch, she got the Guilly’s bar group as a partner and for management.

  10. Hi there! We had a horrible experience there on 22 May. The guy offering shrimps and meat for bbq were extremely rude to us. Making a joke out of us, changing his voice and turning the eyeballs when looking at a waiter guy and girl next to him then all the three laughing at us. We turned back and left all the food we picked for our dinner!!! Never ever going back again and I would not recommend
