Restaurant of Choice (ROC) in UP

ROC is finally giving Chocolate Kiss some competition in the battle for the “Restaurant of Choice” in Bahay ng Alumni (found in the UP campus). It reminded us of the feel-good home-cooking of Henry’s near La Salle, which we miss dearly since it closed down. The restaurant is divided into three sections, which can be easily curtained off for private meetings. It has a classy ambiance with lots of accent paintings and friendlier staff than Chocolate Kiss.

I like it better than Chocolate Kiss, but the overall food taste seems to be “diluted” — either because of the cost-savings effort to cater to the school crowd or it was just poor execution of the recipes on a Saturday afternoon. We’d still go to Chocolate Kiss for our dessert, though, especially for their cookies.

ROC’s Menu:

Soup of the Day (P105). Served with pesto crostini.

The pumpkin soup was just OK. It wasn’t as flavorful as I would have wanted it. It was probably due to a lot of water disproportionately added to it.

Strawberry and Cream Cheese Panini (P130).

This should be named “Strawberry Jam and Cream Cheese Panini”. We usually hate it when we order something that even I can do at home at half the price. The potato salad was a nice compliment to this panini, though.

Queso Bianca (P148). Deep-fried kesong puti, tomato sauce and pesto drizzle.

This was highly recommended but the fried coating of the kesong puti was already hard and tasteless. It overpowered the kesong puti filling. You’ll end up scooping a lot of the tomato sauce to add flavor.

Grilled Chicken Alfredo (P190). Grilled chicken strips, garlic cream sauce and linguine.

We liked the linguine, which was cooked al dente with just the right amount of cream sticking to it. We enjoyed every last strand and drop of sauce of this pasta. Yummy.

Kalbi Stew (P218). Original Yorisa Koreana recipe. Short ribs, kochu garu spice, sesame seeds, beansprouts, steamed white rice.

In Henry’s near La Salle, they used to serve this super delicious beef stew (which we miss a lot) — and this Kalbi Stew is the closest thing to it. Consistent with the soup of the day, the stew is a bit subdued in taste.

We did not order dessert because every time we asked the waiters for their recommendation, they would always say, “Masarap po lahat yan.” Some would mention the name of a cake and then enumerate all the cakes in the display. I dislike it when the owners don’t train the waiters on what to recommend (or maybe the waiters have not tried the desserts themselves).

If there’s one cake we should try in ROC that is a winner versus what Chocolate Kiss offers, what would it be?

  1. We would usually go to UP and eat either at Chocolate Kiss or Chateau Verde.
While walking around Bahay ng Alumni, we stumbled upon ROC’s on the opposite end of the building.
We considered trying it out but our craving for Chocolate Kiss’ Fish and Chicken Kiev got the best of us.
    Susubukan namin next time.

  3. I don’t know if the “resurrected version” of Henry’s is still alive across La Salle. They renamed it to Henmar’s (or something like that). It’s on the 2nd floor of one of the buildings across campus (CSB side). At least that’s what I remember from 1 or 2 years ago. 🙂

  4. the name henry’s rings a bell but i could not, for the life of me, exactly remember which one it was (went to dlsu in the early 90’s).

  5. Anton!! this is out of topic but i just want to let you know that i watched you at “ang pinaka” last sunday! 🙂 you look very shy! hahaha

  6. Yeah, shy naman talaga ako… Gusto ko ngang magback-out duon but I wanted
to help the show since I’ve been to most of the restaurants featured there.
    anton

  7. oh.. okay nga eh 🙂 but i’m just wondering, pano ba nila pinipili yung entries? thought kasi before, galing yung entries sa mga guests nila.. so sila pala yung namimili ng entries then you’ll give feedbacks?

  8. The list was carefully chosen by their entire staff. I would have included
Charlie’s and Lime 88 in the list and remove some that are OK lang. I agree
with 80% of the list 🙂
    Anton

  9. hhmm.. lime 88? do you have a review of that resto? me and my hubby tried charlie’s because of your blog post 🙂 and my hubby loved it! i would love to try the cookbook kitchen.. but it seems like the place is hard to find.. hehe..

  10. a decent ‘tambayan place’ good for any social political scientific economic{etc} discussions filipinos should encouraged foreign students to use the place as international students tambayan to all good international students the good decent koreans in particular bcoz it is philippines fate to be best friends with good decent koreans for life so encourage them to know more about the good stuff not the reverse meaning no one should resort to violences coz violences are associated with BAD OMEN so just stick to fun filled but hectic-serious university/college life so love the good koreans dearly lol

  11. oh my gosh, i loved that beef stew from henry’s in the university mall. i can eat 3 cups of rice with it. kakamiss. i also love the kalbi in korean garden along jupiter.

  12. hi anton,
thanks for the wake up call..
we’d like to invite you one of these days again… servers and kitchen staff will be retrained asap!!!
i think the summer season made them a bit too relaxed..

    (is your wife from ICA?)

  13. no one can replace ‘ SCRAMBLE ‘ FILIPINO NATIVE-LOCAL MADE ICE CREAM i can still savor taste every drop of powdered skim milk brown sugary & strawberry flavor in it..one of so many reasons besides first love why my childhood will never be over lol!

  14. recipe for a tastier but ‘simple’ home made LASAGNE – LASAGNA..igisa sa high heat ang ground beef o pork sa mapula o halos masunog na bawang-sibuyas na maraming marami tapos lagyan ng maraming ground peppers isunod ang maraming kamatis haluin hanggang sa madurog at malanta maige yung kamatis tapos lagyan ng maraming soya sauce imbes na asin meaning no asin just soya sauce pag kulo haluin maige tapos ilagay ang tomato sauce 2 or more can sizes at half teaspoon of oregano or less haluin maige tapos pagkulong kulo na hinaan ang apoy to low or lowest heat possible at use timer orasan ang sauce 5 hours or more but not less na steam heat cooking closed the lid of the cooking pan all the way pero haluin every hour para huwag masunog puedeng dagdagan ng tubig pero yun ay kung kulang lang talaga sa liquid tapos boil the lasagna wide-flat noodles in a separate cooking pan on the last hour of the meat sauce ‘timer’ para pure fresh cooking at walang delayed cooking put 2-4 spoons of olive oil dapat huwag malambot masyado yung noodles meaning medyo matigas ng konti eh turn off the heat kaagad at leave the lid closed all the way for half an hour tapos drained the noodles water tapos heat-bake mo yung oven to 400..in a baking dish o oven bowl lay the lasagna noodles flat covering entire bottom turned off the meat sauce when timer says so then add some meat sauce spread on top of the flat noodles then add lots of some shredded cheese on top of the spread meat sauce na nasa on top of flat noodles naman tapos keep repeating the same process until your baking dish-bowl are full of it or you run out of what to add but make sure that on the very top of the whole dish are lots of meat sauce and the most amount of shredded cheese and no lid cover NO TOP cover place them inside the middle rack of the oven use timer bake 400-430 heat for 30-45 minutes depends on how much you prepared for cooking so just check after half an hour{timer]but no matter what the top part of the lasagna inside the oven must be reddish not dry at all or not burned this way filipino families can save lots of money o as an alternative if theyre dissappointed with any restaurants they go to lol! tapos have fun dining lol

  15. btw: if the tastier simple home made lasagna is for turo-turo o carinderia menu to multiply profits you can add an improvised ‘bechamel’ meaning prepare another small cooking pan of cups of milk then add arina at used ‘whisker’ para haluin yung milk ar arina konting ground pepper in slow heat hanggang mabou yung arina at milk into like a curd o cottage cheese like yung parang medyo malambot na keso ang hitsura nya kailangan marami kasi ihahalo o ilalagay mo rin ito as evenly spread on top of the lasagna meat sauce saka lang ilalagay yung shredded cheese on top of the additional ‘improvised bechamel o milk arina w/ground pepper into cottage cheese like effect na pandagdag sa in between layers ng lasagna at keep adding o repeat the same process layer after layers ng lasagna then bake as i mentioned above kasi itong ‘improvised’ na bechamel ay magpaparami ng husto at magpapasarap din tapos when done baking divide the cut lasagna 4x more than your labor-expenses say you spent a total of 250,00 pesos in ingredients plus add another 350,00 for the trips to markets labor o kitchen time you spent equals total of 550,00 pesos x4 equals 2,200,00 ang total price ng baked lasagna if it is for carinderia o turo turo lang naman since lasagna expanded halos nadoble sa quantity dahil sa additional ‘improvised’ bechamel ng mamahaling lasagna so good luck to all foodie entrepreneurships lol

  16. cont:..remember tastier lasagna on first comment then profit wise is in my 2nd comment the tasteful special lasagna to the limits is this 3rd comment but it means paying more than double in ingredients by adding all rich all other higher in calories ingredients like lots of butter eggs cottage cream cheese quality refined lasagna noodles etc. etc. but why richer in calories what is to gain on-in higher cholesterol calories lol

  18. I think the reason why they could not recommend a cake for you to order is that they didn’t make them. I noticed the Banofee Pie and it clearly was from Bannapple. 🙂 I’m eager to try it though.. it seems way reasonable than Chocolate kiss which I think is way over rated and overpriced for a resto within a campus..BTW,Im new to your site and I just want to say that Im jealous of what youj do!!!

  19. i liked the garlic chicken of roc. i like the ambience. it’s very different from choc kiss as roc is well-lighted while chocolate kiss is not. plus, roc is very quiet compared to chocolate kiss and is a nice place for meetings. though eating it when you’re out with someone who’s expecting you to kiss him/her after the meal is not the best idea.

  20. Hi Sir Anton! I super love your blog and I look forward to your posts everytime. I’m happy to see this feature. I’m a fresh graduate from UP and have tried ROC and Chocolate Kiss many times. I would say ChoKiss beats ROC in terms of food flavor and dessert. I only go to ROC because I love their ambience and it’s more roomy that ChoKiss. Their people are very friendly but it’s not that far from the friendliness of the Chokiss kuyas.
Here are my choices for ROC: Inihaw na bacon, garlic chicken, crispy bicol express (not tried but a friend recommended it so I will try it myself soon) No choice for dessert since I only order the Banoffee (yes, it is from Banapple). I tried the apple pie but it’s grainy.
Chocolate Kiss: Oh where do I start? hahaha Everything’s sooo yummy in Choco Kiss! Dessert favorites are devil’s food cake and kahlua cake. Have you tried these? haha!

  21. We tried ROC last night and I was quite disappointed with some of the dishes like the Queso Bianca (too much breading but at least it’s cheaper than the one in TGIF)& chicken ala king crepe (what can I say…it’s nakakaumay!). The Saigon Barbeque is good although my husband joke that you can get a satisfying beef meal for less than a hundred in Rodic’s.
I don’t know if their service is below average or maybe it’s just near their closing time but it seems like it took eons before we got each dish. It didn’t help that we just finished jogging and we were so hungry at the time.
Overall, I don’t think I would go back to ROC again–I’d stay with the usual UP dining favorites like Rodic’s & Mashitta in Shopping Center, Chateau Verde & Chocolate Kiss (Kahit masungit yung girl sa counter :D)

  22. It is nice to know that there is an alternative to Chocolate Kiss.
I think any restaurant in Bahay ng Alumni is over-priced for the average UP student allowance. For the best and cheapest places to eat in UP, I would recommend Beach House (be careful of frat rumbles; you have to go during school hours and days) for one of the best bbqs and Rodic’s for their tapsilog, longsilog, hotdogsilog and other-silog you could think of.

  23. I recently tried their porkchop rice dish. I don’t know what it was cooked with but it seemed to me it was cooked in butter. It was delicious but the way porkchop #1 was cooked was different from porkchop #2. Medyo inconsistent yung taste. Great ambiance though and it’s pretty quiet. And I agree that the staff here is way friendlier than the ones over at Chocolate Kiss. You guys should feed the cute cat outside. Haha. He won’t bite.
