8 Ways to Help in Your Own Personal Way…

I just arrived back home and every Filipino Family based in Manila is affected in one way or another. Here are things you can do to help in your Own Personal Way…

1. Just Help Anonymously

Manuel L. Quezon III has a complete and up-to-date list on how to help Typhoon Ondoy victims. He has been on top of the digital space ever since the typhoon started. Good job, sir! 🙂

This Google Spreadsheet is also very helpful on How / Where to Help Out The Ondoy Victims.

2. Support your socio-civic organization’s efforts like Oplan Damayan from Manila Jaycees
Every Jaycees and Rotary organization (or other similar groups) has its own aid efforts. The Manila Jaycees (MJC) were in the middle of elections for the JCI Board for next year, and they were flexible enough to adjust their schedules to organize the relief efforts for the people of Marikina last night. I admire that; I might be more active with Jaycees next year…

[Oplan Damayan] “Junior Chamber International – Manila will continue to accept donations for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy from 9am – 9pm up to Tuesday Sept 29/at the Baypark Tent, Roxas Blvd, Manila, which is near Malate Church/ Max’s and Rajah Soliman Park. Volunteers are welcome to join the packing of goods (Canned Goods, Ready-to-drink Milk, Bottled Water, Blankets and Clothes).

MJCs are still in awe at the amount of devastation we saw last night in Marikina. We were able to deliver relief packs straight to the families taking refuge in 2 schools in lower Marikina. Up to 12 families sleeping in one classroom. The whole city is rea…lly a mess and many families still in need. Pls keep the donations coming to JCI Manila’s Oplan Damayan at the Baypark Tent, Roxas Blvd. thanks

3. Support your Alma Mater’s relief efforts
All the education institutions — U.P., Ateneo and La Salle have set up their own relief operations. U.P. is the closest to the affected areas and the people there have helped a lot with the victims, especially in providing the basic needs — shelter, food and clothing.

[My Alma Mater’s Relief Operations]

De La Salle University-Manila – The Sagip Metro relief operation will start to accept donations for Ondoy victims starting Monday @ 8:30 am. Please bring goods to the South Gate of DLSU-Manila.

De La Salle Zobel will be accepting donations tomorrow at Gym 5 (Near Gate 7 in Molave St.)

DLSU Medical Center will accept canned goods, blankets, clothes, water. Location is at Congressional Avenue, Dasmarinas, Cavite. Telephone lines are at(02) 844-7832 and (046) 416-4531

La Salle Greenhills for Greenhills/Mandaluyong/San Juan Area, if you want to help out with the rescue and relief operations, you can drop off your donations (clothes, food, etc..) at LSGH Gate 2 or volunteer from 9am to receive, sort, repack the donations.

4. For Corporations, please donate your products, especially the consumer goods companies.

Relief centers need the basic necessities — food, medicine and protection. You can support your companies’ relief efforts by donating in cash or in kind.

There is an appeal from Anne Castro: “If anyone knows the distributor of OFF in the Philippines, please appeal for a CORPORATE DONATION for all the relief centers. Heard mosquito population is rising. DENGUE is a very difficult thing to deal with. All of the survivors out there know.

[P&G Relief Efforts]

This is on top of P&G’s immediate donation of Php 3.8M worth of products to ABS CBN Foundation and the Philippine National Red Cross. But we can still do MORE as we are slowly finding out that more and more people – P&G and non-P&G – are seriously affected by the typhoon.

For those who would like to donate to the central P&G Typhoon Ondoy Donation Drive, you may do so in cash or in kind (see details below). All employee cash donations will be equally matched by the company to provide more aid to more people. This will benefit typhoon victims – both P&G & non-P&G employees.

Cash Donations over the next 2 weeks:
•       Company has opened a BPI peso checking account specifically for immediate typhoon relief & aid purposes only.
•       Please deposit to BPI 6750 – Checking Account No.: 3200-0128-35; Account Name: Anna Lourdes L. Legarda (pls address checks to the account name).
•       If you cannot deposit to BPI, you may give cash or checks to Donation Drive Site SPOCs, who will take note of who donated, amount, and check number.
o       GO – Anna Legarda (21/F), Liza Ong (20/F)
o       GBS – Reuben “Benny” Nuval (24/F)
o       Cabuyao – Dhemz Perez

•       For employees in our international office who would like to donate to the central typhoon aid fund, please follow details above and include the BPI Swiftcode “BOPIPHMM” which will allow you to wire money to the peso account. Note that your bank may charge you a minimal transfer fee of ~$5.  Please advise Anna Legarda of Philippines ER upon wiring your donation so it can be tracked.

Donations in Kind:
•       You may drop off donations until Friday at the assigned locations: GO – 21F Pantry; GBS – 10F Marketplace; Cabuyao – 2F Cafeteria.
•       Priority items for donation are: clean water, food (rice, canned goods, ready-to-eat, non-perishables, etc.), blankets/jackets, clothing (shirts, shoes, etc.), other relief/aid needs (flashlights, batteries, toiletries, etc).

We enjoin all employees to participate in the donation drive. Thank you to the many employees who have already done efforts and expressed willingness to help. You may also do personal donation efforts to other organizations that are more easily accessible to you. The objective is to HELP P&G and non-P&G victims as much as we can at the soonest possible time.

Let’s bring out the true P&G spirit of touching and improving as many lives as possible in this time of urgent need.

5. Support TULONG KABATAAN

Tulong Kabataan is a donation and relief drive of major national youth groups* to mobilize youth power to help victims of Typhoon Ondoy.

I want to volunteer. What do I do?

The main thing is to collect donations and to encourage people to donate. Priorities are food items like potable water, canned goods, rice, cooking utensils. Blankets, banigs and medicines are also needed. Donations in cash are also good (it’s a lot easier to just buy sacks of rice than to transport, sort and collect).

Mobilize your community, barkadas and family to help out. Convince friends to chip in and donate. A couple of hundreds could go a long way. Go house to house and collect donations.

Bring your donations to your nearest Tulong Kabataan donation centers listed below or donate directly to online and bank facilities (list below).

You can also help out in repacking and distribution activities. Contact us at 09186106275 or 09266677163.

6. Donate CASH personally to people you know who are affected, especially your friends, clients, or co-workers.

One of my Maven Secrets clients, Patrick (of Comedy Cartel) was severely hit. Here is the latest update from him and his family:

“Good am sir Anton. We’re ok na po. Doing major clean-up & retrieval of whatever items which could still be salvaged. We’ve already went down napo yesterday. Damage assessment of our place was really depressing, as all our property is gone. Same with my cousin’s house in Pasig, Greenpark Villas & Titas in Cainta po. Trying to Raise funds to help them start over. Staying strong for my parents who were really traumatized, as we stayed in our almost submerged bungalow for hours before walking through two houses’ roofs to transfer to a higher place at the peak of the storm’s strong winds last Saturday. My mom even fell from the roof as she stepped in a weak part of the yero, plunging her back to her room. Good thing she remained conscious, as the doors were already locked and water was gushing in, so she was able to open the door before we almost broke it. Adrenaline rush po ako with no sleep from Saturday to Sunday to watch the water level, which almost reached us din sa 2nd floor of the place where we transferred. Felt the pain of my cuts & bruises just yesterday. God is good as he stopped the rains Saturday night, but the waiting for the water level to go down from 10pm Saturday night to 6am Sunday Morning was excruciatingly slow. We’re just thankful we’re all alive & mom only had a bruised eye & some scratches. Thank you sir for the concern. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I know God will return it to you and your family a hundred fold. Hope you had no relatives po who were affected too. Thank you again and see you soon po.”

You can help Patrick by donating to his BPI Loyola Katipunan Branch Account # 3089-0541-91.

7. Donate your OLD Clothes!

We have some old clothes that we were planning to put up on a garage sale for some time now. We will just be donating them to people directly. It is also touching to receive messages like these…

Maria

hi Anton! i’m currently here in FT Labuan, a small island adjacent to Sabah. some of my friends here, mostly chinese and malays, would want to donate old clothes. If I send it ba like a package, is it taxable?

Good sana kung may PAL office dito sa amin, maybe I can coordinate with them kaso the PAL office yata is in KL pa which like 2-hour plane ride from our place.

Nanghihinayang kasi ako dun sa clothes kasi I know everybody needs clothes right now apart from the basic food stuffs.

5:07pm

8. Launch your own project like “Philippines Survival Guide (to the End of the World)”!

I’ve been thinking of launching my PhilippineSurvivalGuide.com project in 2010 to have a collective and proactive effort to plan for all possible catastrophic scenarios. I believe that Typhoon Ondoy is just the start and we will experience even worse events in the future.

We need to prepare. Let me know what you think about this idea…

Live an Awesome Life,

Anton

  1. Anton, thank you for the private citizens for coming to the aid of our Filipino brothers and sisters devastated by this calamity of epic proportions. For those who have lost loved ones, we commiserate with you and your families. For those who have lost material possessions, you can always bring those back. It’s our spirit that we cannot ever lose, or else everything is in vain. The private citizens of this country helping through their schools, churches, organizations, charities and ngo’s make me truly proud to be Filipino.

  11. PhilippineSurvivalGuide.com sounds like a great idea! Maybe you can put tips there on how to choose good homes (ex. avoid buying property in flood-prone areas or raise the land of your property a few feet or whatever) or how to ensure the survival of future generations (ex. reforestation).
Here’s another idea for those who prefer getting cash without withdrawing from the piggy bank: collect recyclable materials and then sell them. Use the cash to donate to Ondoy or to buy relief goods for donation.

  12. the philippines will rise up beautifully as filipinos always withstand calamities-deavastations though ‘traumatic’ to most.. meaning philippines will be even more greener even more beautiful later..nature has a way of cleaning ‘debris’ though sad cruel meaningless ‘meanness’ to human understanding.. meaning nature’s released of mighty powers
nature’s way of benting ‘angers’ anywhere it strikes mean calmness afterwardsmeans re-organizing lives means KNOW THE VALUE OF LIFE means LOVE YOUR LOVED ONES AS IF EVERYDAY IS THE LAST DAY OF THE WORLD{but it is not the end of the world ‘yet’ lol}planet earth has a few more years to go right now just be strong & you can still have fun with climate changes make sure your children has books komiks magazines pocket books to read at least one small toy stc. for smaller kids to keep them busy instead of just ‘feeling’ afraid in corners also to keep them quiet & busy card games o plastic bingo games for senior citizens or keep a small separate family group plannings as what to do next in all other possible scenarios FAMILY CALAMITY PLANNING O FAMILY EMERGENCY PLANNING ACTS are GREAT GAMES TO DO when stranded in one place lol while middle adults take care of their needs including neighborhood sorting outs clearings cleanings so in calamities devastations filipinos can also find time to enjoy it as if it is JUST a bad vacations ..we love you philippines keep busy just think of your latest hardships as part of a hectic ‘exercises’ you lacked from the past years lol..

  13. in those public emergency shelters i remember i was once in it we are all tired wet cold feeling sore very uncomfortable and people were fighting with each other bcoz of what they did or did not do some balmes their calamity situations bcoz their spouses are having an affairs lol some grandparents were fighting bcoz they forgot to bring coffee with them lol some were fighting bcoz they wewre wearing the wrong clothes bcoz of pressures from their families to hurry lol..so i stand in the center and tell them ‘funny’ stories it is mostly about ‘how stupid i was’ lol!..calamity victims mostly children in the shelters started laughing so i put more ‘stupid acts’ to keep them laughing so grandpa stop scolding grandma over coffee or wives husbands blaming each other on extra marital problems or sieblings discomfort over wrong clothes etc etc so as time passes over my ‘stupid acts’ they each one fall asleep deep..the next morning while still asleep i felt so many hands tucking or touching my blankets well so i stayed sleeping that whole day dreaming-fantasizing i was in a bad but turned out o.k. wet third rate vacations lol!..meaning AATENTION: those filipinos who are NATURAL COMEDIANS you know what to do in times like these in your your cold wet afraid hungry shelters anywhere that maybe

  14. Hi Anton,
I also felt compelled to start a positive, solution-oriented blog (http://ondoyheroes.blogspot.com) that would gather and harness the Pinoy bayanihan spirit that emerged from Ondoy. I just think we should focus on the good, and work our way towards healing from there.
The Phil survival project is a great one, maybe we can volt in and work together? 🙂
    hugs,
    Johanna

  15. My heart goes out to all of the beautiful filipinos affected by the devastating floods.
Its all over the news here in Australia and after spending alot of time in the Philippines this year I have really been touched by how loving and caring filipinos are.
If there is anyway that we can help please let us know.
    You are in my thoughts
    Stevie Nicholson
    Hi-5

  16. The water level on our street was almost to the 2nd floor of the house, till now we are still cleaning and sorting through the debris..still I am very thankful that all of us are ok and my hear and prayers goes out to all the people who are not as fortunate.
I really hope that we learn from this experience, that some kind awareness will push forward and that the government will follow through plans in flood preventions such as proper sewerage systems, waterways and garbage cleanups like the one in singapore. We are all at fault because we have neglected our cities, we allowed our rivers to become polluted and waterways to be reclaimed. I hope that the government and private sectors can work together to create awareness that will solve this problem, I also hope that projects like this will push through and not be shelved like the others.
