Homemade Savoury Pies by Tina Raines

ULTIMATE TASTE TEST 3.0 RATING: 3.6 out of 5.0

Tina Raines came back from her successful Ultimate Taste Test 2.0 debut and offered more filling variations of her Savoury Meat Pies and Gourmet Sausage Rolls.

Some of the foodies already became groupies of Tina’s pies and awaited their comeback in UTT 3.0. The foodies in the Australian Embassy were also enthusiastic about them after ordering a few dozens after UTT 2.0. OAP is also a fan, especially of the Callos Special Pie and the Shrimp and Smoked Salmon Gourmet Pies.

With an Aussie husband to do the quality control of the meat pies, Tina is now ready to compete with some home-bakers who started offering meat pies in Salcedo Market and other places. I believe she will win because of the quality of her crust, the flavorful filling, and her passion in sharing the best in her life. 🙂

Good luck, Tina! Go! Go! Go!

The Savoury Pies Story by Tina Raines

Food, more than a source of nourishment, was always the great unifier in our family. We would often come together around the dining table with great gusto, eager to try out my mom’s new creations. At times, the food was a hit and there were a few misses as well, but for me and my siblings, the food my mother served up gave us great comfort.

Eating was a big thing for us. I’d often describe my family as a family of eaters, and this I have to credit my mother.

Early on, we were constantly bombarded with different kinds of food largely influenced by my family’s heritage, which is Bisaya and Bicolano. This, I feel, carried on to me to this day.

When I started working, I would often frequent different restos and try out the latest cuisine. Thus, my inherent love for food was further developed.

Soon, I got married and migrated to Australia with my husband. Breakfasts are a big thing for both me and him. We are early risers as my husband is into surfing and the beach. We would always make a short stop by the bakeries near the beach and they would always have meat pie at the ready. I was so into meat pie that I literally scoured and tried different meat pie offerings from dozens of bakeries. Call it an obsession. I also learned to make my own meat pie with different variations and putting my own Filipino twist into some. I wondered how this would do as a business and continued to perfect my meat pie recipe in the hopes of one day introducing authentic Aussie meat pie to the Philippines.

Almost a year ago, I was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer and decided to return to the Philippines after 6 years to get treatment, so plans for any business were put on hold as I focused on fighting the greatest battle of my life. After 6 months of aggressive treatment and chemo therapy, my cancer is officially in remission.

FINALLY!!! I can get back to my meat pies and build a business from the ground up. I am very eager to get going as if I have a new lease on life, while enjoying some Aussie meat pie along the way. Cheers!!!
