Gelatissimo, Best Gelato in Cebu and Manila?

When a friend told me that Gelatissimo is the best gelato in Manila, I was determined to try it for myself. I got tired of tasting just-another-frozen-yogurt-or-gelato-store out there but Gelatissimo made a big impression. For me, in the gelato arena, the best ones are:

I’m gearing up for a poll soon for the Best Gelato, Frozen Yogurt, or Ice Cream in the Metro, so please do let me know if there is a Gelato store out there worth including in the list…

Gelato uses milk and sugar without cream, unlike Ice Cream which has, well, cream. It is more dense so there is little air, and it melts faster so you have to finish it quickly. We love the warm red walls and the overall cafe ambiance that invites you to just hang out. The servers are fun and are delighted to give you a taste test of all the flavors (without them giving you a disapproving look if you don’t order).

Gelato (Small with 1 flavor – P110, Medium with 2 flavors – P160, Large with 3 flavors – P190).
The presentation was very nice! There’s usually some sort of decor of the actual ingredients on top of the gelato. We love the chocolate flavors — the Truffle and Chilli variants are both good! Yum! 🙂

“It was the Honey Toffee & Malt VS Hazelnut…actually, it has almost the same taste…what  made me decide to get the Honey Toffee & Malt was that I thought I’d get it for a change  since Hazelnut was always what I get and always available in almost all of the gelato cafes  out there.” – Gelatissimo Cafe by Rache, MrsAwesomePlanet.com

I love their unique Filipino flavors like Coconut Gelato, which I have not seen in any other Gelato shop. Aidan particularly liked the Mango flavor. 🙂

This was supposed to be our entry for GelatissiMOM contest, but I missed the chance to submit it. 🙁

Bambino Cones (P420 for pack of 12). “Premium grade bite-sized mini cones hand-filled with chocolate, vanilla, hazelnut, mint, raspberry and mango gelato then dipped in coloured chocolate coating to suit the flavour. For extra extravagance, there’s the premium range – pure indulgence. Packed into insulated foam packs for your convenience to take home for that perfect dinner party dessert!”

I saw these nice Bambino Gelato cones that you can order to take home. I wonder how long it can stay outside without air-conditioning? Have you tried these cones?

Gelatissimo Coffee (P160). “Our coffee is full-bodied, sourced for its traditional Italian blend, using beans that are chosen for their ability to taste good in every cup. We urge you to try it ‘affogato-style’ – strong dark coffee complemented by a scoop of creamy vanilla gelato.”

I tried the affogato and it was nothing special, really. It is just like a gelato float where you put vanilla gelato with the strong coffee. I prefer my coffee hotter and stronger.

A good place to hangout for desserts when you are in Greenbelt 🙂

P.S. It is great to see that after the Iloilo restaurant invasion of Manila, we are seeing the Cebu chains reaching Manila with the likes of La Maison, Gustavian, Gelatissimo and the latest one, Chic-Boy.

  1. you can include Caffe Ti-Amo gelato at SM North Edsa Annex. it’s Jollibee’s cafe venture from Korea. the honey bread with gelato is what we like.

  2. Anton, thanks for the post! You zeroed in on my favorite flavor which is Coconut. But they have three new kiddie-friendly flavors and among those, my second favorite flavor is Popcorn (both sweet and tad bit salty). I love the way they put this gelato shop together – the owners really paid attention to all the elements and the details. Though the gelato is not cheap, it’s worth the experience. Without forgetting to mention that the gelato tastes very good, without being too rich & heavy like full-cream ice creams. It’s the compromise between yogurt and ice-cream! 🙂

  3. Thanks for the post. How is Gelatissimo compared to Caramia, the ice cream of the Amici chain? There seems to be a proliferation of Italian ice cream in the country. Is this an emerging food trend?

  4. I actually like Gelatissimo… Ever since Red Ribbon bought Amici parang naging commercialized na dating niya 🙁 even the taste 🙁

  5. Hi Anton! Have you tried Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf’s Hazelnut Frozen Swirl? I think they just came up with their own line of frozen yogurt and the Hazelnut flavor’s the BOMB! But it’s not really launched yet, as I have to say “AWESOME” to the Barista before I can order. Anyhow, you gotta try it.
Limited branches though. I bought mine at Four Seasons Salcedo Branch. I suggest you check out this site: http://www.facebook.com/coffeebeaphilippines before buying in any branch, as I know the Hazelnut flavor’s not available in all branches.
But hey, it’s yummy so I’m gonna go back there tomorrow. Hahaha!

  6. I’ve tried Gelatissimo and Angelati. I still go for Angelati. its more smooth and the flavor still feels real. Just my own opinion.
Angelati still tops my list. 🙂

  7. THE BEST GELATO IN TOWN! I tried this first when I was in Cebu, and I was seriously considering bringing some home to Manila. Now that it’s here, my favorite gelato is just 30 mins away!

  8. no doubt, it’s the best looking gelato but a far cry from what a real gelato in Italy. I still prefer the ones sold by amici and gelato eliseo (cebu based) being retailed by dolce casa.

  9. darn, i’m yet to try the Amici Gelato, but what i loved about their gelato is the Chili Choco! im such a fan of spicy foods, though the spicy-ness lasts for quite a while, you feel it down your throat even after you’re already done with your cone. lol

  10. I received a tub of green tea gelato this past Christmas from a friend. It was labeled ‘Bar Dolci’. It was by far the best green tea gelato I’ve tried in the country. Just the perfect amount of kick. I tried to order from them but was told they were in r&d stage, and was suppose to open in Burgos Circle soon. Any light you can shed on this label?

  11. please google this – le tre gazelle gelati exclusivi in milano, italia (yes, the home of the real gelato). u will not think of tasting any other brand. ever. 🙂

  12. You said that there is a difference between gelato and ice cream. But the fact is that there is no difference. Gelato is basically the translation of ice cream. However, there is a difference between American and Italian ice cream.

  13. have you also considered that their ice cream is made from pre-mixed ingredients from Australia and not really fresh ingredients? You should always consider how the food is made rather than just looking at the finished product (which if you compare to real italian gelato is not that good)

  14. loved the chilli chocolate and white chocolate flavors….along with the berry flavor….it’s a wish that they have a branch somewhere in qc.we always find an excuse to go to GB 5 just to have some!yum!!!

  15. i tried this when i was in cebu last september. it is very good, although i found it very very sweet. i had the mixed berries and i forgot the other… hazelnut, i think.
i would have it again, although given a choice, i think i still prefer the one i get from rockwell’s foodcourt resto… piaza or piazzo… not very sweet. i never fail to drop by for a cone. last i checked, cheaper too by 20 or 30 bucks.
