Legend of India

There’s a new Indian Restaurant in town along Jupiter Street called Legend of India. It is marketed as a Fine Dining Restaurant with a mini-bar inside, flat screen TVs showcasing Bollywood movies, and a mini-Indian dessert sari-sari store. We loved the sauce-y dishes matched with either the naan or basmati rice. I was impressed with the extensive line of Indian desserts that you can buy for take-out.

The ambiance is a bit stiff, formal and seemingly uninviting. The menu is poorly designed with hand-written changes that communicate that this is not really a Fine Dining Restaurant.

The FREE mixed nuts appetizer with mint and sweet sauce is something unique and a great start for your meal.

Palak Paneer (P280). Blended spinach mixed with homemade cottage cheese.

The Palak Paneer was OK. It had a balanced taste of being not too cheesy and not too spinach-y. We’ve tasted better ones in other Indian restaurants.

Pani Puri (P130). Small, flaky buns served with mint water.

The Pani Puri was highly recommended by a friend. Sadly, the flaky buns served were more like tough crusts. I think the mint water is not something Filipinos would get used to. We don’t recommend this.

Plain Naan (P100).

The naan was good, and it’s a good idea to eat the sauce-y dishes with the bread.

Dhal Tarka (P250). A very famous Indian dish, yellow lentils cooked with special Indian spices.

Normally, I would not order something like this dish; however, a friend highly recommended it. It’s a good thing that we took that friend’s advice and got it. All of us were raving about how a simple vegetarian dish with yellow lentils could taste so good. This was finished to the last drop.

Rajma (P250). Kidney beans cooked in spiced onion and tomato gravy.

In contrast, although it was highly recommended as well, this vegetarian dish with kidney beans did not get the approval of a lot of people. The presentation of the food was also a bit boring.

Rogan Josh (P450). Mutton cooked in brown gravy.

The meat was very tender and the gravy was good, but it’s not something to rave about. I don’t think the P450 price tag is justified. Anyway, it’s a good thing then that the servings are really good for sharing among 2-4 people.

Chicken Tikka Masala (P340). Boneless chicken marinated in Indian spices and cooked in a tomato and butter sauce.

Our favorite Chicken Tikka Masala was unanimously voted as the best dish for the night. We loved the creamy tomato sauce that went with the tender chicken. As most Filipinos would say, “Sauce pa lang ulam na.

Kulfi (P120). Indian Ice Cream.

I liked their kulfi, which had a texture of pastillas coated with ice cream. The nuts and spices sprinkled on the ice cream made it interesting.

The variety of Indian desserts was very impressive. We tried some of them:

Jelebi (P400/kg) and Kalakan (P800/kg).

The Jelebi is a sweet, orange Indian candy that I found too sweet. I liked the Kalakan more — it tasted like pastillas in maja blanca form.

Green Pista (P800/kg) and Sev Barfi (P700/kg).

Similar to Kalakan, but these two are made with other ingredients (pistachio and barfi, respectively).

Overall, we liked the free appetizers, Dhal Tarka, Chicken Tikka Masala, and the Indian desserts. I really didn’t like the uninviting feel of the place. We still recommend that you try it out, though, if you are tired of the commercialized taste of New Bombay.

  1. Tried it tonight for Father’s Day. Food was definitely great in taste, I’m not sure if its meant to be fine dining with the tissue paper napkins. My wife commented it feels like a house that was converted into a restaurant. The mural is a bit cheesy but its all about the food. The food is pretty good, I like their selection of vegetarian appetizers and dishes. Their currys and biryani rice is different from Queens, I’m not sure if its in the recipe or spices but if you try both you’ll know what I mean. Also the dessert selection is wider and I like their variety even though its not the kind of desserts were used to, its nice to try sweets from our countries once in a while. The kalakan is definitely good but dont have too much 🙂 They gave us complementary ice cream for our daughter and their staff was attentive and nice. Always filling up the glass of water which is Alkaline btw, incase the spiciness gets overwhelming. Also with our meal came yogurt which was good for neutralizing the spiciness. Overall I prefer the ambience of Queens but Queens is more of a number of asian foods while Legend of India is just Indian. Their menus are different so you can go to both places and eat good meals. Definitely bigger dessert selection at Legend of India.

  2. Wow thanks Andre for the commenting back on your Legend of India experience. Yes it is a bit hard core Indian and they should have branded it as home-based vs. Fine Dining. Glad you like the food and the dessert 🙂

  3. I’d say, try them all people. How would you know if you’ll like it or not. Experiencing other cultures through their food wont be a waste of you money and time. Just have an open mind the same open mind we would ask others to understand our culture.

  4. Have been to Legend of India couple of times and my friends did like it alot compared to the other Indian Restaurants. Just last week one european friend of mine who lived in Delhi for 3 yrs, was delighted with this restaurant.
As a curry lover I’ve learned the secrets of making a good curry and after sampling their curries, I found out that they have 3 cooks from India, which is a big plus in making any genuine cuisine, as there are restaurants that for the 1st few months they would hire foreign chefs to train the local chefs/cooks but after they leave local chefs/cooks just dont understand the taste and feel of that particular cuisine, which can be sad. Have just seen so many restaurants make that mistake, cause all the owners want is maximum profit….

  6. Well legend of India is now completely off the list. This has been a flavourite for a while but the last few times have been not just disappointing but plain and simple appalling. Order lamb rogan off the bone, the serve on the bone…… This may not sound like too much of a problem until you realise this was a delivery……. The second time they “purposely” did this Iade th come back and deliver one off the bone…….to which there was more fat than meat.
Well still loving their butter chicken I decided to give it one more try only for them to let themselves down, ordered two buttered chicken and well, as we all know chicken is not expensive so for the price you pay I expect more than a few messily pieces and a tub full of sauce!
Last chance for them and big failure. Typical of so many restaurants, start so well then end up not caring and don’t give a toss. Well this is the first time I find myself writing down my thoughts and I will ensure that I let anyone who asks about Indian by thoughts on legend of India.
When will everyone learn that you do a good job you hold onto your custOmer and get the occasional recommendation. You do a bad job and the whole world will be told!
Mistakes can happen but I do not accept shoddiness and blatant “couldn’t give a toss” attitude that is now coming out of the legend of India.
    Very sad.
