Frozen Kefir is a great innovation, and you can think of it as an evolved form of Frozen Yogurt — but instead of powdered yogurt, a very healthy and probiotic Kefir is used. It tastes like White Hat Yogurt in terms of creaminess and sweetness, but you can be assured that what you are eating is very, very healthy.

I first heard of Kefir from Jeren’s Kefir Culture, and she turned it into Kefir Salad Dressing and Ice Cream sold in Arama. Kefir Power Probiotics could be credited as the first supplier to offer Kefir products in the local market, and they are selling them at Salcedo Market. Kefir became popular in the Chinese and health-conscious circles because of its seemingly miraculous healing properties.

Now, kefir comes in a frozen form, and it is the perfect dessert if you want to maintain your toned beach body while in Boracay. 🙂 I wish they would already set up an outlet in Manila!

Frequently Asked Questions about Kefir

1. What makes it different from other yogurts?

— Our ingredient is different. We don’t use yogurt but Kefir. Kefir is a cultured, enzyme-rich food filled with friendly micro-organisms that balance your “inner-ecosystem.” More nutritious and therapeutic than yogurt, it supplies complete protein, essential minerals, and valuable B vitamins. Both kefir and yogurt are cultured milk products… but they contain different types of beneficial bacteria. Yogurt contains transient beneficial bacteria that keep the digestive system clean and provide food for the friendly bacteria that reside there. But kefir can actually colonize the intestinal tract, a feat that yogurt cannot match.

2. How much kefir is used in them?

— I am not sure if I am allowed to give out this information… but I think it’s safe to say that we use enough to give about the right number of bacteria in every serving. Our supplier grows and cultures them. She is also a nutritionist.

3. How & when did you discover kefir?

— January this year when my boyfriend (Boj Iliscupidez) and I started liking frozen yogurt mainly because it’s a delicious dessert and healthy at the same. When we went to Boracay this February, we realized there was no establishment offering frozen yogurt on the island. So we said to ourselves why not open one on our own? Immediately after that trip, we started asking about franchising frozen yogurt companies but found it very expensive. So we did our own research, attended trade shows and seminars and came across an Italian speaker who said that in this business we have to make sure we make a unique declaration and offer something our competitor doesn’t have.

We did several tests on using fresh yogurt and were quite satisfied. We were inclined to use “fresh yogurt” as a declaration since most yogurt stores are using purely powdered mixes — until Boj discovered kefir (because he is into organic food, etc.) He made the suggestion to use Kefir instead of Yogurt. After a few taste tests and comparisons, we realized that between yogurt and kefir, the taste is actually better (there’s a distinct tartness in kefir vs. yogurt), not to mention the health benefits. Never mind that it’s more expensive as long as we offer something healthier and tastier.

4. Do you consume it? If so, what benefits have you noticed?

— I only consume it by eating Swirls. But we do have a lot of customers who take it daily (as milk, smoothies, or mixed with their food). One Canadian guy said, when he was young, his mom used to make him eat it as a food supplement. Some teenagers who went to the store said that their mom requires them eat kefir as an alternative medicine and it’s like a punishment for them because it’s so hard to eat as is. (It tastes like cottage cheese but looks like cauliflower.)
