Le Bistro Vert, “The Green Bistro”

Nothing beats starting your day with a healthy breakfast. The energy that you get from healthy food sets the tone for a great day.

We were not really keen on trying out Le Bistro Vert. We thought it would just be an expensive coffee shop that tries to hitch a ride on the healthy bandwagon. We also thought that it would be yet-another-Chef-Sau-restaurant that offers the same flavors, just in a different restaurant form. But we were wrong…

You have to climb a few steps to a mezzanine floor beside Fraser Place (where Capone’s used to be located).

The green aura of the place welcomes you as you enter the bistro. During breakfast time, you can see the rays of the sun peeking through the windows.

Architect Dan Lichauco did a great job with the green concept. It’s as if you are stepping into a green glass house. We thought that the golden bamboo stenciled on the wall was a bit tacky, though (parang pambata).

The Aquarius Mural on the wall was a great idea. We asked about it, but the waiters didn’t know the story behind the artwork. Maybe all the owners (Chit Juan, Jeannie Javelosa and Reena Francisco) are Aquarians?

It’s nice that they’re attempting to grow herbs at the back of the restaurant. Always a refreshing sight to see! 🙂

Since the bistro is co-owned by the founders of Echo Store, there is a mini-Echo deli selling exotic organic products. We bought this Tamarind Concentrate for P120.

The Echo deli display of sausages and bread was not that appetizing — maybe it’s because it is located under the stairs, which is a no-no in terms of feng shui, especially for a food product.

We were given free camote chips while we waited for our food. It was too oily. I’m hoping they can find a way to make it crispy without it being so oily.

Surprisingly, their chocolate was Hershey’s. For a store promoting “fresh, wholesome, locally grown produce”, maybe our locally grown cacao or tablea can be served instead?

Organic 4-Cheese Frittata Cake (P225 +10%sc). with Arugula and Herb Salad

The Fritatta is essentially an Italian Omelet that could be compared to a crust-less quiche. I like the combination of Quezo de bola, Parmesan, a bit of Cheddar and Cream Cheese. I’m not sure if the eggs and all the cheeses used are organic.

I like how the bitter and slightly grassy taste of arugula matches well with the dressing and the egg. This dish is simple but surprisingly good. Aidan loved it!

Filipino Breakfast (P250 +10%sc). Chicken Longganisa, Garlic Rice, Egg, Achara

The chicken longganisa is light and healthy. You don’t get an overly stuffed feeling after finishing it. For the serving size (good enough for one person), we find its price OK.

Apahap Fillet, Buro Mustasa (P295 +10%sc). Citrus Soy Dressing, Brown Rice Pilaf

We loved this! It’s like eating a sandwich of two layers — smooth and creamy fish fillet with buro (fermented shrimp) — wrapped with mustasa leaves. The fish tasted fresh and clean, and I thought that the buro was just perfect without that offensive, fermented taste.

We brought Joshua to his pre-school, so it was just Aidan and baby Raphael who joined us for breakfast. Here is a cute picture of 6-month old Raphael. 🙂

The cakes are from Jennifer Silayan of Doof Cakes.

Pandan Sansrival (P150 +10%sc). We tried the sansrival. It is the creamier type (ala M Cafe’s sansrival) versus the usual crunchy ones. The desserts are just OK and nothing to really rave about.

Overall, we recommend it, especially when you are looking for a healthy breakfast in the heart of Makati.

  1. What makes it green or sustainable? even Chocolate Fire’s Ice Cream under their stairs doesnt feel right 🙂
Are chicken or meat products sustainable foods??? 🙂

  2. Hi Anton!
Sounds like a good place to try, especially since its near my place. Are there other breakfast meals that are a bit on the meaty side? Do they have different types of coffee or hot chocolates for the morning as well?

  3. for 2 pcs of longganisa, that’s pricey. i would like to try the frittata and the sansrival.
is raphael your third child? he’s cute!

  4. i myself was not too keen on trying it, but when i had the porkchop, i loved it! i just don’t know if i would be willing to pay that much for the food though. and you should’ve tried the chocolate cake (sorry, i don’t recall the exact name) and the calamansi pie!

  5. tatlong tambling at dalawang kembot away from my office! i will definitely visit soon! i want the apahap fillet and calamansi pie!

  6. my friend and I ate there a while back, the restaurant wasn’t too full but it took long for our food to come out. too long. and we ordered the mushroom appetizer, it was expensive for what it was. food was just ok, i expected something more, but oh well. maybe if i try another dish it’ll be better.

  7. Im a vegetarian and in search of Manila’s best veg dishes.
the vegetarian panini is actually quite good. Ive been back a couple of times for that.
Plus the manager was nice enough to bring my food down, together with the change, without me having to ask (since
parking space is a bit hard to come by).

  8. Thanks for this comment, I'm about to blog about the best vegetarian places in the Metro. Can you share with me your top 5 places for vegetarian dishes?

  9. Hi Anton. For me Blissful Belly in Xavierville has the best normal pinoy-vegan dishes. The worst would be Bodhi in Banawe because of the strong chinesy gluten smell and taste of their dishes. No offense to Bodhi but their food just smells like an old chinese man. Haha. Vegan dishes doesn’t have to smell like that.

  10. Bodhi Bodhi is like for SM Foodcourt type of food, they use MSG also and almost everything has the same taste but its good theyre vegetarian.

  11. Beautiful photos.i myself was not too keen on trying it, but when i had the porkchop, i loved it! i just don’t know if i would be willing to pay that much for the food though.

  12. Had breakfast today here with my family. The feel of the place is nice and cozy. Sadly the food(bfast) is not something I’ll be back for. The 4 cheese frittata lacked taste and the amount of cheese in it. The pinoy big breakfast, was ok. The coffee was ok. Its still apartment 1b for me (between the 2).

  13. Sustainable because most of the ingredients are sourced locally. Hence, the resto gives jobs to local farmers.

  14. took our friend’s advise and hosted a thanksgiving diner for 20 pax last friday. after reading your blog, i had some expectations from this bistro. in summary, i would rate it a 5 (1-10, 10 being excellent). when i asked the bistro crew about how can “battered fish” & “pork chop” be organic? the reply, it has some organic ingredients in it …. hmmm, am still at a lost here … this bistro being sustainable, green, organic & etc … just another marketing hype perhaps?
