ROSE Manila’s Sushi River and Adam’s Ice Cream

ROSE-21.jpg

This Japanese restaurant is a bit unusual.

First, it is named after Roe (fish eggs), which is common in Japanese cuisine. The plural of Roe is still Roe, but Rose is a better sounding name for a restaurant.

Second, it takes pride in having the first sushi river in Manila where the sushi is placed on boats and served to your table as it goes around the river. Sakae Sushi did not really take off in Manila, but maybe using a river instead of a conveyor belt would be better in terms of presenting the sushi.

Finally, it is more known for its artisan ice cream by Adam than its Japanese fare.

Here are some tips if you want to try Rose:

At the center of the restaurant is a granite table with a sushi river, which transports fresh sushi rolls on boats straight out of the kitchen.

Rose Manila’s Sushi River (P40/plate +10% service charge).

Each plate basically has the same price, so we often got the Uni or Salmon Sushi. The sushi was just OK–nothing to rave about–but it’s good if you are looking for a different kind of experience.

It’s better to try this out during Happy Hour (weekdays, 5pm-7pm) where all the plates are almost half-price off at P25/plate. You can also have unlimited draft beer for P199.

Admittedly, I didn’t expect the boys to have that much fun watching the sushi boats.

★ Rose Bento (P350 +10% service charge) with rice and miso soup, served during lunch and happy hour.

The ala carte menu with the big plates serving is ridiculously expensive, ranging from P400-P800 for each big plate. Go for the lunch set meal specials at P350 with rice and miso soup instead.

The Rose Bento was interesting. It had 4 pieces of sushi, tuna sashimi shaped like a rose, cucumber, salmon teriyaki, Japanese fried rice, miso soup, and…

…banana tempura dessert. Sarap!

The Rose Bento is good to share and has good value at P350. We made the mistake of still getting a sushi boat from the river before this bento arrived.

ROSE-20.jpg
★ Ocean Medley (P595 +10% service charge). Our freshest fish and shellfish sauteed with organic vegetables.

We also recommend this Ocean Medley, which you can order for P350 in their lunch specials with rice and miso soup.

It had generous servings of salmon, tuna, and shrimp on a bed of sauteed vegetables. The quality of meat was good, but the tuna and salmon were a bit dry already and not as juicy as we expected.

The highlight of our meal was the dessert…

★ Adam’s Ice Cream, available exclusively at Rose, is made by hand daily in the kitchen with French cream, all natural ingredients, and a passion for the most glorious result.

Manila is getting spoiled with the emergence of various makers of artisan ice cream, and ordinary ice cream or fro-yo is not anymore enough. Adam’s Ice Cream is making waves because of its unique flavors using French cream.

It’s a bit expensive at P125-P150 per scoop, but it’s really good! 🙂

ROSE-24.jpg
★ Himalayan Salted Caramel (P125/scoop +10% service charge). Loaded with nutrients and minerals, hints of burned sugar give way to a mouth-watering, salty-sweet balance.

The boys loved this because of its salty-sweet flavor and creaminess. 🙂

ROSE-25.jpg
Chocolate Flame (P125/scoop +10% service charge). Belgian Dark Chocolate (80% cacao) and Japanese Chilies make your palate get up and dance.

This one is definitely for me! I enjoyed the kick of chili in this ice cream. Although I did not find it too spicy, the boys did not like it for obvious reasons.

ROSE-27.jpg
★ Figgy Blue (P150/scoop +10% service charge). Creamy, savory Italian Blue Cheese mixed with Honey-soaked Figs.

We love artisan ice cream and blue cheese, which is why this seemed like the perfect combination. 🙂 It was yummy but a bit too rich, so one scoop was enough for us. The figs helped a bit with the suya factor.

Overall, Rose is something different and fun to try in Bonifacio Global City. We would recommend ordering the lunch meals, trying out the sushi river during happy hour, and savoring Adam’s Ice Cream. 🙂

A P500/person budget would be enough.

Full Disclosure: Nothing to disclose. We paid for our meals. We are not connected with the restaurant and any organization promoting it.

P.S. Rose Manila is located in between the now-closed Alexandre Bakery and the former Dunkin Donuts. I was wondering about the real story as to why Alexandre closed. Would you know?

  1. I dunno why the conveyor belt sushi didnt take off, its so big in Hawaii 🙂 Love Genki’s sushi,
I guess its just not an asian thing to grab sushi thats out in the open. the sushi has to be high quality though and fresh.

  2. Price it not worth-it for a very bad service! went there and got our food after 45 mins, the waiter spilled the sauce of the Ocean Medley in one of my friends, and he didn’t even said sorry. Instead he just ran back to the kitchen. Even some of the customers walked out, because of poor service. Waiters also prioritize foreigners, you’re still talking, and one second they’re going to leave you hanging and never come back, because the foreigners call them.

  3. My wife and I found Rose restaurant after reading this review and discovering it was right in our neighborhood. We have visited three times already and are hooked! The sushi and sashimi is super-fresh and beautifully presented. The cooked salmon is also great, my favorite dish, but the edamame is excellent and one item that keeps us coming back. We have always experienced excellent and friendly service from the staff and the very personable and caring owner Adam. On Saturday night my wife tried the beef tenderloin for the first time and thinks it is the best she’s had in 3 years in Manila. The triple mushroom miso soup and unique “Tuna of the Land” roll are also among our favorites. And the ICE CREAM, oh MY! It is truly the Best I have ever tasted!
