EARLY BIRD Breakfast Club: Start of the All-Day Breakfast Era in Manila?

Early Bird Breakfast Club-10.jpg

EARLY BIRD Breakfast Club is an all-day breakfast restaurant that embraces the belief that by inspiring people to have beautiful breakfast, one can be happier everyday

The resto even goes to the extent of opening 24 hours on Friday and Saturday to provide recovery food after a good night out (especially for the people coming from URBN BAR).

Could this be the advent of an ALL-DAY BREAKFAST craze here? I’ve seen many similar restaurant concepts around, but only a few can execute it well like BREAKFAST at ANTONIO’S and EARLY BIRD Breakfast Club in BGC.

Here are some tips to having a beautiful breakfast at Early Bird Breakfast Club:

One of the key elements to having a beautiful breakfast is being able to enjoy it in a happy, maaliwalas place. Cheery colors, high ceiling, a garden feel, and their signature logo of a sunny-side-up egg on a half shell all contribute to the ambiance.

Even though it’s less than one month in operation, it’s becoming a cool breakfast place for the young.

The second floor is ideal for groups or functions.

The only downside to it is that people below can hear your discussions because of poor acoustics. It gets distracting because of the loud chatter from different dining groups having a good time.

The secret of the Early Bird Breakfast Club is the Yin and Yang Chef Tandem of Matthew and Matthew — Chef Matthew Lim, a Filipino-Chinese chef specializing in Filipino Breakfast and Chef Matthew Hornsby-Bates, a British chef specializing in Western European Breakfast.

★ Viva Longganisa (P345+10% service charge). Four pieces of heirloom-recipe longganisa served with Breakfast Rice and your choice of egg.

One of the signature dishes of Chef Matthew Lim is his version of Longganisa. It’s sweet, has an all-meat texture, and an addicting aftertaste — good stuff!

I like the happy presentation of the food, and the serving size is enough for one with a big appetite but still good enough to be shared if you like.

They could improve the vinegar, though, which does not have any character. A good longganisa should always come with a good type of vinegar.

★ The Ultimate Grilled Cheese Sandwich (P345+10% service charge). Cheddar, mozzarella and gruyere between slices of toasted bread with sweet and spicy onion relish.

The specialty of Chef Matthew Hornsby-Bates is the Full English Breakfast, which usually gets sold out early during the weekends (we missed it).

We ordered the Ultimate Grilled Cheese Sandwich instead, and it’s been a while since we ate a really good one like this.

The overflowing three-cheese combination showcases the yumminess of gruyere, the salty taste of cheddar, and the stretch of mozzarella. It’s best eaten with the onion relish.

I love the way they artistically presented the sandwich — hip and playful.

★ French Toast Fondue (P210 +10% service charge) with cinnamon sugar, maple syrup and melted chocolate.

Any Filipino meal is not complete without an awesome dessert.  Their signature French Toast Fondue (French toast bread sticks with three dips served in eggshells) fits the bill nicely.

First, we dip the bread stick in the melted chocolate, which is not too rich, but almost diluted.

Then, we dip it in the maple syrup for a sweet coating.

Finally, we dip it in the last eggshell for a cinnamon sugar finish.

★ Nutella Hot Chocolate (P145 +10% service charge)

How can you go wrong with Hot Chocolate with Nutella?

I would have preferred it to be served in a ceramic cup; then again, the glass presentation works to show the Nutella bits. You have to mix it before drinking it.

Congrats to first-time restaurateur Ellen Joy Co, her husband, and their partners for a well-executed All-Day Breakfast concept inspired by her stint in Singapore.

Overall, we recommend Early Bird Breakfast Club for a beautiful morning experience with friends when you are in the BGC area. Try the Full English Breakfast, Viva Longganisa, and the French Toast Fondue.

It’s not ideal for meetings yet because of the poor acoustics in the second floor. Budget P500/head.

I love the fact that they go 24 hours on Friday and Saturday, and open as early as 7am on other days. It’s one of the hippest places for breakfast in Manila. There are a lot of yummy options in the menu — let us know your favorite dishes in the Comments section.

  1. Those really are some mouth watering foods! The presentations are also very good. It’s also good to have fish variants on your menu I guess? It’s very Pinoy style also. Filipinos loves to eat fish in their breakfast, atleast, for most of us and as I know.

  2. Last night we ordered viva longanisa. It tasted ok. Also ordered the grilled cheese sandwich, it lacked in cheese, too sweet because of the onion jam. it seemed like a reheated cheese sandwich. Nothing special with their food. And too pricey for me. Staff were attentive and nice.

  3. Looks good except that it’s unreasonably expensive for breakfast fare. And I wouldn’t pay P345 for a longganisa, egg and fried rice breakfast!! I can probably get the same delicious item for 1/3 the price elsewhere.

  4. went there twice na but still unable to eat because of bad service. went in deadma ang staff. its not as if puno sila. then they served coffee without first busing the table next to us. kept asking for menu but they seem oblivious to my raised hand. so i stood up to get it myself. when we were ready to order, I again raised my hand and after about 3x na daan daanan lang ako, I gave up. stood up and left… when I complained on their FB page, they deleted my comment. ha! i give up!

  5. the interior, the logo, the menu, the placemat: very tasteful and well-designed!
the food, particularly the pancakes: fail!
the service: i agree with Dyna (may 9 post)…cold and i-couldn’t-care-less attitude
bottomline: i do NOT recommend this place
we barely touched our food, fled to IHOP and had a better experience. despite its commercialized image (which i often less prefer), IHOP knows how to cook breakfast better.
