DONG-LIM KNOT WORKSHOP: Learning the Art of Traditional Korean Maedeup (Knots) @KTOManila

 

DONG-LIM KNOT MUSEUM is a showcase of traditional Korean Maedeup (Knots) Art. Here, you can also learn first-hand how to make various ornamental knots the traditional way through do-it-yourself workshops.

It was established in April 2004 by traditional knot technique master, Sim Yeong-Mi. She learned the technique from her Father-in-Law, who learned it from her Great Aunt-in-Law, a knot technician in the palace during the last Joseon Dynasty. 

 
The museum-workshop is located in a cool neighborhood and set in the traditional hanok style.

There’s a display of different tassels and pendants – some are on exhibit only while some are for sale.

These are examples of the different end-products of traditional Korean knot-making. 

To really appreciate this beautiful tradition, I recommend creating your own piece.

You can choose from these easy-to-make pieces, but we decided to do the necklace for KRW 10,000.

Sim Yeong-mi demonstrates how to do the knots and communicates via sign language.

The first step is to select your preferred round knot colors.

You place them on a special needle to try out the different color combinations.

Then you select the right color of string to use for your necklace.

Sim Yeong-mi measures the length of the necklace based on an existing finished product. 

   
They teach you how to properly tie a knot using the X technique.

This knot should secure your colorful round knots in place.

The assembling process is fun. It’s a good way to experience this beautiful tradition of Korean knot-making.

The best part is being able to wear your necklace proudly. 🙂 

  
You can also choose to wear it like a friendship bracelet if you want.
