THAI JUNGLE CURRY: Ran Gaeng Pa Sriyan Restaurant in Bangkok @migrationology

After our boat noodle experience, we made our way to Thai Jungle Curry — another favorite of my food blogger friends Mark and Ying Wiens.

I love discovering authentic Thai flavors. Learning how Thais enjoy their food is a great way to understand their culture better.

The restaurant facade is unassuming. You won’t give it a second look if you’re just passing by.

MENU: Curry Dishes, Fried Vegetable, Fried Meat & Seafood | Spicy Salad, Deep Fried, Fish Dishes, Soup Dishes, Rice Dishes, Dessert

The place just looks like any other neighborhood restaurant in Bangkok. We decided to eat in the al fresco ground floor.

Tod Man Pla (Fried Fish Cake –  70 THB)

This is one of the best fish cakes I’ve tasted! Not too oily, full of meat, and best paired with the sweet-spicy cucumber sauce.

Jungle Curry Restaurant-13.jpg
pla pad keun chai (fish with celery – 70 THB)

This mixed vegetables with fried fish dish was just OK.

Jungle Curry Restaurant-31.jpg
Tom Yum Pla Chon (Tom Yum with Snakehead Fish – 70 THB)

Not your usual Tom Yum. I love the balanced flavors of the clear broth and snakehead fish.

The service is friendly. It feels like dining in a Thai local’s house.

Jungle Curry Restaurant-18.jpg
✮ Gaeng Khua Hoy Comb (Sea Snail Curry – 70 THB)

The best dish for me is this sea snail curry. It has a rich yellow sauce, mushrooms, vegetables, and chilies…just the way the locals like it.

Jungle Curry Restaurant-20.jpg
✮ Gai Pad Kee Mao (Chicken with Basil and Spices – 80 THB)

This was super spicy and I loved it! Imagine eating the chicken with slices of red and green chilies and basil to balance out the flavor.

Did you know that chilies were introduced to Thailand by the Portuguese?

I always enjoy going on food trips with food and travel blogger friends. 🙂

Jungle Curry Restaurant-26.jpg
✮ Yam Makua Yao (Eggplant Salad – 70 THB)

My new favorite Thai vegetable dish — egg with eggplant.

Jungle Curry Restaurant-33.jpg
Goong Pad Sataw (Shrimp with Stink Beans – 100 THB)

One of the hardcore dishes I’ve tried during this trip — stinky beans with chilies and shrimp. The stinky beans are long and flat and sliced like almonds. True to their name, they have a stinky smell, and a peculiar flavor that grows on you over time.

Jungle Curry Restaurant-43.jpg
Gaeng Pa (Jungle Curry – 70 THB)

The jungle curry has expanded my understanding of the flavors of Thailand. The soup has the consistency of tom yum rather than a rich curry sauce. It has mixed vegetables, bamboo shoots, and a diced quail with bones. So this is how the jungle tastes like. 🙂

Jungle Curry Restaurant-28.jpg
Itim Kati/Toorien (Coconut/Durian Ice Cream – – 25 THB)

Coconut and durian ice cream with sticky rice — best Thai dessert ever! This puts the fire from all those chilies out. 🙂

Overall, I would recommend Ran Gang Pa Sriyan if you want to appreciate the authentic flavors in Bangkok, especially if you’re tired of the cliché Thai food we have in Manila. The food here is very spicy, which I love. 🙂

Make sure to order the Sea Snail Curry, Chicken with Basil and Spices, and of course, the Coconut and Durian Ice Cream for dessert. Budget THB 200/person.

  1. Hi, Anton how are you? This is a nice dishes in Thailand. I love Thai dishes especially the curries. I like spicy dishes. There are many Thai restaurants here in San Francisco Bay Area because there are many Thai people here. Americans like Thai dishes, too. Some of my co-workers are already visited in Thailand especially at the Floating Market. These dishes make me hungry, Anton. Don’t forget the Thai iced tea, it’s delicious, too.
