What was once a humble hawker stall from Singapore, Hawker Chan, is now a fast-growing Michelin-star restaurant across the globe. Originally called Liao Fan Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice Noodle, the name Hawker Chan was adapted for its dine-in restaurants following the global expansion.

Chef-owner Chan Hong Meng first opened in Singapore’s Chinatown in 2009. Eight years later, he earned his first Michelin Star for the signature Soya Chicken Rice. Foodee Global Concepts, the group responsible for bringing Tim Ho Wan, Llaollao and Kam’s Roast to the Philippines, now adds Hawker Chan to their roster of international franchises.

Here’s our experience at Hawker Chan…

FIRST THINGS FIRST

Hawker Chan is strategically located at the Entertainment Mall area in Mall of Asia, right beside Mang Inasal. The restaurant is well-lit and can comfortably seat 86 people.

THE FOOD (Menu)

oap-hawker-chan-8936

The menu at Hawker Chan is simple. Choose your meat, and choose whether you want it served with the restaurant’s signature rice or noodles.

The meat is freshly prepared daily and the roasts can be seen on a window display behind the counter.

Thai-Style Tofu (₱ 160) • Fried tofu with apples, onions, sweet chilli sauce and peanuts

We loved this! The apples and peanuts added a much needed crunch to contrast the soft tofu, and the sweet chilli sauce was somehow refreshing.

It remind me of the Thai papaya salad. Great start to a meal!

Seasonal Vegetable (₱ 99) • Steamed gai lan (Chinese broccoli) with fried garlic bits

Just your regular steamed vegetables but with a generous serving of garlic.

Fried Dumpling (P100)

We loved the dumplings filled with shrimp and pork. A must order!

Any 3 Combination Platter (₱ 270)Soya Chicken/Char Siew/Roasted Pork/Pork Rib

Great choice if you can’t decide which meat to have.

There are four kinds of sauces available (Clockwise from Left: Chili Sauce, Dark Soy Sauce, Pickled Chili, Light Soy Sauce). We tried it with all the different meats and here’s what we found worked best:

  • Chili Sauce with Soya Chicken
  • Pickled Chili with Char Stew
  • Kecap Manis (Dark Soy Sauce) with Roasted Pork

Fun fact: Foodee was unable to replicate the Chili Sauce using local ingredients, so they had to import it. This means you’re getting the authentic chili sauce from Singapore.

Soya Sauce Chicken Noodle + Roasted Pork (₱ 158 + ₱ 70)

The noodles come with a side of sambal that adds a tiny amount of spice to the dish.

The noodles get glossy too with the sambal.

Soya Sauce Chicken Rice + Char Siew (₱ 128 + ₱ 70)

The rice is drizzled with a light soy sauce. I personally prefer this over the noodles.

roselle

Roselle Tea (₱ 60)Rose-flavored tea

The flavor is new and unusual, but it eventually grew on me. It’s not like most rose-flavored drinks I’ve tried, I would personally describe it as if beet were a berry.

Hawker Chan

(New ItemMilk Tea (P88)  & Barley with Calamansi (P50)

I loved the barley with calamansi that taste like my fave drink in Tim Ho Wan but zesty.

Skip the Milk Tea.

You can also buy an entire roast chicken for just ₱ 598. Foodee even asked their local supplier to breed larger chickens to meet the international standard of a 1.5kg minimum.

Hawker Chan

(New Item)  Potluck (P1560 )

The potluck meal includes half a chicken, 3 choices of meat, 8 dumplings and vegetables that’s perfect for takout.

FINAL THOUGHTS

grouppic

I’m glad that there’s finally an excellent, affordable option for Singaporean hawker food in Manila. The prices are a bit lower compared to Singapore as well. Order the Thai Style Tofu and the Any 3 Combination Platter to get a taste of everything plus a side or two of rice. This is a good place if you’re looking for a quick, hearty lunch. Budget at ₱ 200/head for two.

Congrats to Foodee Global Concepts for another winning venture!

P.S. Be one of the first 100 diners at Hawker Chan on March 4 for a treat! First 10 customers will receive a year’s worth supply of Hawker Chan products. The next 20 will receive six (6) months’ worth, the following 20 will get three (3) months’ worth and the last 50 customers will get one month’s worth of products of the Singapore-based restaurant.

  1. I ordered soya chicken with rice. The chicken was served without chicken skin. The roast pork noodles are not good. Roast pork is tough and noodles are not soft. Need to improve.

  2. Dear management,

Could You advise how to join to Hawker Chans franchise please? I would like to open a restaurant in europe, but cant find any contact to the business, much appreciate
