There are a lot of things to see and do in this not-so-tiny island…you only have to know where to look.

Boracay is renowned for its fine white sandy beaches, sunny weather all year round, and crazy nightlife. But did you know that on the other side of the island lies a special treat?

Bulabog beach in Boracay is perfect for kitesurfing! It’s a paradise with the ideal wind and water conditions, which is great for learning and practicing kitesurfing.

Kitesurfing is a surface water sport that combines wakeboarding, windsurfing, and paragliding into one extreme sport. In short, it’s like riding a surfboard while being towed by a huge kite.

3

I used to wakeboard on a monthly basis a few years back and had always wanted to try kitesurfing.

10

At last, I finally had the time and courage to try the sport in the best kitesurfing academy in the country–Freestyle Academy Boracay.

 9

For starters, I enrolled in one of their 2-hour beginner classes as I have zero knowledge in kitesurfing. As part of the kitesurfing package, I was given and taught about the basic gear and equipment. This includes the kite, handle bar, and belt harness.

 5

After getting all my gear, I was taught the basics of controlling the handle bar through a mock simulation. These are vital steps in controlling the kite, so be sure to listen carefully.

On paper, controlling the thing seems like a no-brainer–pull left to move the kite left; pull right to move the kite to the right. Sounds easy enough, right? Right…

 12

Next step was to attach the kite to its harness. It involved a series of knots and a bucket of sweat to manually pump the kite until it took shape.

 13

The kites are surprisingly huge but light when held by hand. It felt like I was carrying nothing, but it’s an entirely different story once the kite is high up in the sky.

4

This thing can definitely pull two adults in one go! Once in the water, a kiteboarder must harnesses the power of the wind with the kite while being towed across on a bound wakeboard.

15

Trust me, fighting against the wind isn’t easy at all. I took me hours and hours just to get kite steady in midair.

 16

I was dragged and lost control of the kite a couple times during my beginner sessions. But that’s all part of the learning experience.

14

Now I know why they teach the basics in multiple sessions because one does not just learn how to control and ride a board in one day.

 1

What I learned during my short but sweet class is that nothing can be achieved in a short period time. Everything takes time and effort.

But at the end of the day, I was finally able to participate and learn kitesurfing and will definitely be back to finish what I started and hopefully master all the classes.

Tip: Be sure to go there early to catch the big winds. Preferably weekdays as Bulabog beach can get really crowded on the weekends.
