You’ve probably seen it before while strolling along the coast of Boracay–girls wearing flashy and colorful fins posing in front of the camera.

Did you know you could actually be a real life mermaid for a day?

According to the owners, Mermaid swimming is an artistic expression and a fun whimsical way to keep fit! Conducted by Certified Mermaid Swimming Instructors, classes are structured to be fun with safety in mind.

Mermaiding is where one wears a mermaid tail, which is a stretch fabric that goes up to the waist and has a mono fin attached at the end.

We joined a class over at PMSA (Philippines Mermaid Swimming Association), the only certified mermaid diving school in ASIA, located at Boracay Fisheye Divers store.

Meet our lovely instructor, Maria, who is actually a real life mermaid.

Class begins by the beach with a warm up exercise to strengthen and condition the body for the swim. And believe me, it can be quite tiring.

7

It is then followed by a series of breathing exercises to help us regulate our air intake while in the water.

5

Classes are not held in an actual classroom, but rather, in natural bodies of water such as oceans.

4

The fins were incredibly light and comfortable, but it only restricts you to a single type of swimming method.

The girls are ready for their picture taking session.

Next step is advanced swimming in the open water.

13

Ok, this was a little bit tricky and requires a lot more practice and skill. It was really hard to stay afloat and swim with a fin attached to both your legs.

1

When “Mermaiding” one swims like a fish using both legs as a fish tail and using the core muscles to propel oneself forward, with variations to the hand placement and movements.

12

Swimming in the open ocean really takes a toll on your body as you struggle to keep afloat. But once you get a hang of it, you can swim gracefully under and over water and live the life of a mermaid.

Overall, we loved the experience because it was safe and fun, and it allowed us to meet and interact with other adventurous aspiring mermaids while keeping fit. The whole activity isn’t just enjoyable, it’s a full body workout.

Boracay never seizes to amaze me despite all the negative things I keep hearing about it. It’s still the same old Boracay I know but with better and more offerings.

Note that this is part of a progressive class that requires time and dedication to master. One does not simply perfect it in just a few hours; you really have to give it your best if you want to excel in a high-intensity activity like this.
