I. Fundacion Pacita

Basco, Batanes

The best place to stay, hands down, is at Fundacion Pacita. This non-profit lodge boasts of its charming rooms with picturesque vistas.

Originally built as a home studio for the late Ivatan artist, Pacita Abad, the hilltop house has been converted with gallery-inspired rooms (P20,000+/night).

Basco, Batanes

Pacita Abad was known for her larger-than-life, colorful mural paintings. One of her last works was painting a modern pedestrian bridge called The Alkaff Bridge (it crosses the Singapore River at Robertson Quay) with playful colors.

When she passed away, the husband, Jack Garrity, gifted the house to the siblings who decided to convert it into a bed and breakfast facility where all the proceeds go to projects for education, heritage conservation efforts, and livelihood projects.

Fundacion Pacita has 12 rooms located on top of a cliff with a 270-degree view of the sea, mountains, and the sky. The Fundacion is always mistaken for an old house, but it’s actually only about 15 years old.

It has a country-style charm in a lush garden setting. Its signature terrace rooms with blue chairs look out peacefully towards the sea.

II. Accommodations in the Basco Town Proper

Midtown Inn

Basco, Batanes

I love the accessibility of this hotel because it’s located at the center of the town. It’s near the airport, banks, restaurants, convenience stores, and other establishments. Plus, it’s only a 10-15 minute walk away from the lighthouse.

There is a restaurant on the ground floor serving Ivatan cuisine. The hotel has 11 air-conditioned rooms that all come with private bathroom, hot and cold shower, TV, Wi-Fi (at the lobby), free breakfast, complimentary drinks, and airport transfer.

Ysabelle Homestay

Basco, Batanes

For those on a budget, I recommend staying in a homestay. For P350/head per night, it’s not a bad deal. There are no signages yet for this newly renovated house, so you’ll have to rely on the picture to find it.

Landbank is only a few blocks away, so withdrawing money from the ATM is not a problem. It’s also near the airport and other major establishments. Like Midtown Inn, it’s only a 10-15 minute walk to the lighthouse.

Our rooms were complete with a heated shower, TV, and electric fan.

Tip: There’s an additional charge if you use the air-conditioner.

Disclosure: We paid for our own accommodations and fees. Our flight to Batanes was a project sponsored by Philippine Airlines. I wrote this article with my biases, opinions, and insights.

P.S. If you make the trip to Itbayat, it’s recommended that you at least stay overnight.

Transport to and from Itbayat is only available in the mornings and late afternoon. As there are NO Inns or Hotels on the island, you’ll have to secure a homestay. A homestay can be arranged through your Tour Guide. For our trip, we stayed at Cano’s Lodging in Itbayat, Batanes (P300/person).

Itbayat House

Batanes, the northernmost tip of the country, lies in the path of tropical cyclones that enter the Philippines every year.

Unlike the regular stone houses found on the island, our homestay was made of concrete walls but with traditional cogon roofing. These cogon roofs are made of fishnets and bamboo that can withstand typhoons and last for decades. Fortunately, the cogon material also makes the room cool in the summer.

Itbayat House

Our doors and windows were made of hardwood planks present on all sides of the walls, which provided a cool breeze and ventilation to our humble room.
