Boutique Burger Kitchen (BBK): The Best Burger Joint in BGC by Chef Carlo Miguel?!

By Sean

BBKpost17

Boutique Burger Kitchen or BBK is the brainchild of famed Chef Carlo Miguel and wife Ria, the first restaurant they opened together (without any partners).

This diner-themed restaurant serves a variety of American classics, with a focus on quality and freshness.  You can expect to find good old-fashioned burgers that have been given the gourmet treatment, and served at affordable prices.

Almost everything at BBK is made in-house, which is one of its strong points. This ensures that the quality and consistency of the food is maintained, and guarantees the customer gets the freshest burger possible

The food here may be simple and straight to the point, but we were blown away by it.

If you love a good burger, you’ll definitely love BBK!

Chef Carlo has always had a love for burgers, having spent his childhood helping make them at his family’s restaurant. With BBK, Chef Carlo Hopes to recapture those moments and share his passion for great burgers with the rest of Manila.

The key to a great burger is in the patty. A combination of US Angus and Wagyu, quality cheese, and fresh ingredients is what Chef Carlo uses to construct what he calls “the best burger possible”.

The bun is inspired by Hokkaido Milk Buns — soft but with a firm structure. All burgers are cooked medium unless otherwise specified.

BURGERS

BBKpost6

Classic Cheeseburger (P280)American Cheddar, topped with Lettuce, Onions, Pickles, and BBK Ketchup.

The best burgers are always the simplest. Basic and to the point, the beef patty really gets to shine here. Perfectly chargrilled and topped with quality American cheddar, there was nothing we didn’t like about this classic. A must-try!

BBKpost8

French Flair (P390)Gruyere Cheese, Dijon Mustard, French Fried Onions, Bacon, and Mushroom.

The Gruyere cheese adds a nice creamy nuttiness that blends well with the earthy flavors of the dijon and fried french onion. Pair with a light beer or Pilsner.

BBKpost7

The Aussie Burger (P380). Cheddar Cheese, Crispy Bacon, Fried Egg, Beetroot, Pineapple, Grilled Onions, BBQ Sauce, and BBK Ketchup.

This monster of a burger is an Australian staple. Chef Carlo grew up eating these in Australia and wanted to bring the Aussie-style burger to the Philippines.

The grilled onions and crispy bacon are a great combination with the pineapple and beetroot.

BBKpost9

Bleu Cheeseburger (P320)Creamy Bleu Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, and Balsamic Onions.

Chef Carlo uses a mild bleu cheese that is melted over the burger during the grilling process.

Bleu cheese tends to be overpowering and that’s all you’ll taste sometimes. We liked the fact that BBK’s version uses a mild cheese so you can still enjoy the flavor of the beef.

BBKpost16

Turkey Burger (P320)House-ground Turkey Patty with Brie Cheese and Cranberry Ketchup.

Turkey isn’t common in the Philippines, so it was a surprise to find it in a burger. This was a fantastic sandwich and gave the Classic Cheeseburger a run for its money.

The turkey patty was moist and flavorful and the brie cheese with cranberry ketchup had just the right amount of sweetness, which brought the entire burger to a whole other level. This reminded me of Thanksgiving. Another must-try!

BBKpost30

Veggie Burger (P390)
Mycoprotein Patty with Mushrooms, Gruyere Cheese, Dijon Mustard, and BBK Ketchup.

This was another surprise. Chef Carlo explained that the Mycoprotein is made from a type of fungus that has been treated, giving it a taste and texture similar to beef.

If you’re a vegetarian, this is the perfect burger for you. It wasn’t as mushy as veggie patties tend to be, and it contained the smokiness from the grill just like a regular beef patty.

BBKpost10

Gourmet Burger Steak (P220)Signature US and Wagyu Beef Patty with Garlic Rice and Homemade Gravy.

Another standout. The beef patty really gets to shine here and the homemade gravy is delicious! Perfect for kids or anyone wanting a rice meal.

STARTERS & SIDES

BBKpost15

Fish And Chips (P180)Beer-battered Tilapia with Fries and Tarter Sauce.

While the flavors are spot-on and the batter is excellent, the tilapia just doesn’t work. The crispy breading becomes soft and soggy very quickly.

A traditional Fish and Chip uses Haddock or Cod or similar types of white fish that have a dry and flaky texture.

BBKpost18

Tomato Soup (P280)Rich and hearty Tomato and Basil Soup with Grilled Cheese Sandwich.

Tomato soup is an American comfort food that is typically paired with a grilled cheese sandwich.

The soup was rich and spicy, packed full of flavor, and could be enjoyed any time of day.

BBKpost3

Caesar Salad (P280). Romain Lettuce, Croutons and Bacon topped with a creamy Parmesan Dressing.

Another dish that’s simple and to the point. The lettuce was nice and crisp and the parmesan dressing was light and vibrant.

BBKpost1

Chicken Nuggets (P280)Homemade, 100% organic Chicken Nuggets with Honey Mustard and BBK Ketchup.

These are probably the best chicken nuggets around. Crispy on the outside and nice and tender on the inside, kids young and old will enjoy these. You must order this!

BBKpost2

Skinny Fries (P100). Classic cut Potato fries that are nice and crispy.

BBKpost4

Fried Pickles (P180)Crispy Beer-battered Dill Pickles with BBK Ketchup.

Fried pickles is another American invention that hasn’t quite caught on in the Philippines, but is slowly starting to find its way into menus. Sadly, most aren’t up to par or are totally forgettable.

Chef Carlo is the only one who seems to have nailed it. The pickles stayed crispy and the spices are perfectly balanced between sweet, salty, and sour. You have to try this at least once in your life!

BBKpost5

Onion Rings (P120)Classic breaded and fried Onion rings.

The seasoned batter makes these stand out from your typical onion rings. They were light and crispy with a sweet bite to them.

DRINKS

BBKpost14

Craft Sodas (P120)Homemade Syrups and Infusions.

Chef Carlo brings back the good old-fashioned soda fountain with his version of high-end sodas made from fresh ingredients. Each soda is made to order, and as of now, 4 flavors are available:

– Apple & Elderflower
– Strawberry, Lemon & Basil
– Passionfruit & Mint
– Ginger & Calimansi

We really enjoyed all the sodas but the standouts were the Passionfruit & Mint and the Apple & Elderflower.

BBKpost31

Milk Shakes (P180-190)Thick creamy milkshakes made from in-house ice cream.

Like the sodas, the milkshakes are made with fresh ingredients. They are nice and thick and not too sweet.

You can choose from classic flavors like vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, and Oreo, or you can try their Nutella, caramel, or salted caramel. (Try the Salted Caramel.)

DESSERTS

BBKpost11

Fudge Brownie (P220)Served A La Mode with your choice of Ice cream.

The brownie was rich and chocolatey and paired well with caramel.

Chef Carlo recommends the caramel ice cream when ordering the fudge brownie.  The combination makes the dessert taste almost like a snickers bar.

BBKpost12

Mango Meringue Sundae (P220)Vanilla Ice cream, Fresh Mango, and Crispy Meringue.

Mango and vanilla are a classic combination and the crispy meringue gives it a nice sweet, crunchy texture.

This was our favorite dessert, and we were told that it was inspired by a dessert made by Chef Carlo’s mother. Definitely, order this!

BBKpost13

Banana Split (P220)Three Scoops of Homemade Ice cream with Caramelized Banana, topped with Peanuts, Hot Fudge, and Whipped Cream.

The classic banana split, but what sets this apart are the grilled pieces of banana. You can choose which ice creams you’d like but we recommend the classic trio of Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberry.

FINAL THOUGHTS

BBKpost29

BBK is a good restaurant and they make great-tasting burgers using quality ingredients. Priced affordably, BBK is perfect for lunch or for just hanging out and getting a good meal.

If burgers aren’t your thing, their other selections are just as good and made with the same dedication and care.

You can really tell how passionate Chef Carlo and Ria are about their burgers, and the decor and staff make the BBK experience feel familiar and nostalgic.

The price is affordable for the quality of food being served. Truly, a welcome addition to the Burger scene in Metro Manila.

BBKpost22

Order the Classic Cheeseburger with a side of Skinny Fries and a Strawberry Milkshake!

Budget about P500/head for a burger meal at BBK.

Congratulations to Chef Carlo and Ria and the awesome staff of BBK! We wish you great success in your burger endeavors 🙂

P.S. Chef Carlo wouldn’t mind franchising BBK, but that’s in the not-so-near future. He wants to keep his focus on his first store.
