Sweet Charity Hope Valentine!

Most of the people who watched the show during press night, I think,  had low or no expectation about Sweet Charity. Personally, I was not sure if I can relate to the show and its 1960’s setting, fosse-type of dance choreography, and the concept of a “taxi-dancer” during that era.

However, since this show was produced by 9 Works Theatrical with star studded cast of Nikki Gil, Ciara Sotto, Shiela Valderrama – Martinez, Sheree, and OJ Mariano, we decided to go and watched it.

At the end of the show, most of the people we talked to was pleasantly surprised with its entertainment value highlighted by  a couple of explosive dance numbers and scenes that the viewers  were raving about.

The first half was a blast with Nikki Gil’s driving the energy of the entire production and an awesome elevator scene that became the defining moment for Kris Lawrence’s baptism into the theater scene.

The second half was a bit slow, and dragging after the Rhythm of Life production number.  The only thing that saved it was the  emotional rollercoaster of the plot towards  the end.

These are the top 5 reasons why you should watch it:

1. Explosive Showstoppers 🙂

The Big Spender scene sets the taxi-dancer era in the 1960’s. This is the most popular dance song in Sweet Serendipity.

2. Bravo to Nikki Gil and Kris Lawrence!

This was only Nikki Gil’s second broadway musical production after Legally Blonde and she continues to amaze us with her talents. Some people can sing well, but Nikki can act, sing and dance well all the same time. She was a perfect fit for the Sweet Charity Hope Valentine role 🙂

This is Kris Lawrence first break into the theater scene coming with a Star in a Million Season 2 and Party Pilipinas experience. We all loved his performance in the elevator scene and appreciated how he embodied his Oscar Lindquist character. The 9 Works people know how to spot a theater talent 🙂

3. OJ Mariano’s Version of Rhythm of Life!

We loved OJ Mariano in RENT and we loved his Uittorio Vidal performance and most specially his performance as Daddy Brubeck’s Jazz Bohemian in the Rhythm of Life!

4. Taxi Dancer Sisters of Nickie, Helene and Carmen 🙂

We love Ciara Sotto’s Helene (greek), Sheree’s Carmen (latina), and Shiela Valderrama-Martinez’s Nickie characters 🙂 Here is the post-show interview with the cast of the show:

5. First Free Magazine-type Souvenir Program ala “Playbill” in Manila!

We now have the  “Playbill” version in the Philippines! It is a free magazine-type souvenir program for the show. Kudos to 9 Works Theatrical for upgrading the broadway musical theater experience 🙂 I love it and can’t believe that they are giving it  for FREE 🙂
