KITCHEN 56 by Earth Kitchen at The Sunshine Place, a Senior Citizen-friendly Hangout!

SUNSHINE PLACE is one of those special hangouts where Senior Citizens can relax & play with other seniors in Makati. It was started by the Foundation of Tessie Coson originally for her mother, Felicidad Tan Sy, of the SM group.

Here are some tips for when you try out Kitchen 56 by Earth Kitchen, the anchor healthy restaurant of Sunshine Place…

Kitchen 56 and Sunshine Place-1.jpgKitchen 56 is located at the ground floor of Sunshine Place, on #56 Jupiter Street (hence the name).

Kitchen 56 is open to the public but is primarily a Senior Citizen’s resto (i.e. naughty & noisy kids are not allowed).

Kitchen 56 and Sunshine Place-9.jpg
✮ Pitcher of Fresh Dalandan Juice (P260 +10% service charge)

Make sure to order a pitcher of refreshing dalandan juice to start your meal.

✮ Pitcher of Fresh Guyabano Juice (P280 +10% service charge)

My wife loves the fresh guyabano juice more because of the right sweetness and yummy guyabano bits. 🙂

Kitchen 56 and Sunshine Place-13.jpg
Shrimp Spring Rolls (P325 – Large +10% service charge). Shrimp, organic/naturally-produced herbs, greens and peanuts, lime hoisin sauce.

Start with their clean, healthy-tasting spring rolls while you wait for the rest of your dishes, which are cooked on order.

Kitchen 56 and Sunshine Place-8.jpg
✮ Fresh Mushroom Soup (P200 +10% service charge). Organic/naturally-produced shiitake, button, milky, and abalone mushrooms.

The mushroom soup is light, clean-tasting, and not salty. You can really enjoy the full flavor of the mushrooms.

They have their own herb garden beside the resto, which they pick from for their salads.

Kitchen 56 and Sunshine Place-14.jpg
Tempura Salad (P330 +10% service charge). Ebi and fish tempura, organic/naturally-produced vegetables, roasted sesame dressing.

This is a favorite of our kids because of the shrimp tempura and the roasted sesame dressing.

Watermelon and Rocket Salad (P290 +10% service charge). Organic/ naturally-produced arugula, edible flowers, pili nuts, home-made kesong puti, balsamic vinaigrette

I recommend this refreshing salad with watermelon, bits of kesong puti, and arugula. 🙂

Kitchen 56 and Sunshine Place-19.jpg
✮ Scallops and Aligue (P460 +10% service charge). Local scallops, squid ink pasta, aligue, anise liquor, mild chilies.

Our favorite squid ink pasta with yummy flavors from aligue and scallop bits, plus chili to spice up the dish.

IMG_2784.jpg Pumpkin and Goat’s Cheese Paccheri (P340 +10% service charge). Goat’s cheese, roasted pumpkin, pili nuts, and bacon.

Order this if you’d like to try a new pasta combination of pumpkin, goat’s cheese, pili nuts, and bacon. Make sure to have those bacon bits with every bite for added meat flavor and texture.

✮ Four Mushroom and Egg (P385 +10% service charge). Our version of Carbonara. Slab bacon, shiitake, milky and button mushrooms, organic egg.

Kitchen 56’s carbonara using cheese and egg for the sauce, different mushrooms, and a slab of bacon.

Make sure to mix the egg immediately while the pasta is still hot.

Kitchen 56 and Sunshine Place-17.jpg
Sweet Potato Tops Ravioli (P440 +10% service charge). Camote tops, white cheese, pili nuts, Pomodoro sauce, basil, parmesan cheese.

The kamote ravioli with red tomato sauce was interesting.

Beef Bulgogi (P290 – 3pcs +10% service charge). Boneless beef ribs, kimchi rice, salad greens, seaweeds.

The soft taco slices are a little bitin in flavor and satisfying ingredients. Not worth the ~P100 per taco.

Kitchen 56 and Sunshine Place-15.jpg
✮ Beef Kebab (P395 +10% service charge). Boneless beef ribs, tzatziki, grilled vegetables, choice of organic Ifugao rice pilaf or 3pcs. flour tortilla and organic mixed greens.

Our ultimate favorite in Kitchen 56! The beef meat is cooked upon order and served just right with tzatziki Greek salad, healthy and organic Ifugao rice, and vegetables for a complete meal.

Kitchen 56 and Sunshine Place-40.jpg
Braised Bacon (P580 +10% service charge). Slab bacon, red cabbage, marble potatoes.

For meat lovers, order a slab of bacon on a sea of red cabbage sauce with marble potatoes.

Kitchen 56 and Sunshine Place-41.jpg
Vanilla Home-made Ice Cream (P110/scoop +10% service charge)

The home-made ice cream is highly recommended, but since they make it in small batches, not all flavors are available at any one time. Order the pastillas, green tea, or Milo for the kids if available.

 Kitchen 56 and Sunshine Place-1.jpg
Overall, SUNSHINE PLACE is a great, relaxing hangout and pampering place for Senior Citizens. Kitchen 56 is a yummy, healthy, and quiet restaurant in the Makati area.

Take note that this is not a kid-friendly establishment. If you ever go with kids, make sure to keep them behaved and respectful of the privacy of the senior members.

Order the Dalandan or Guyabano juice and get the Watermelon and Rocket Salad or Fresh Mushroom soup to start.

I recommend the Scallops and Aligue or the Pumpkin and Goat’s Cheese Paccheri for their home-made pasta. Don’t forget to order the Beef Kebab for your main course and finish on a sweet note with their home-made ice cream. Budget about P600/head.

It’s a great concept and I do hope we have more of these Senior Citizen-friendly places in Manila!

P.S. Sunshine Place was formerly called “Senior Hub”. The name was changed because the members didn’t not want to be referred to as Seniors.
