PHILIPPINE HARVEST: Celebrating The Best of Local Agriculture & Spirits! (A Photo Essay)

Untitled

PHILIPPINE HARVEST is a partnership between the Department of Agriculture and SSI Group, Inc. that celebrates the richness of Filipino-made products. Over the course of  weekend, more than twenty exhibitors made available hundreds of uniquely made food items, heirloom vegetables, grain varieties, spirits, wines, and all-natural cosmetics that utilize the abundance of the Philippines’ natural resources.

BIOS DYNAMIS

Untitled

Bios Dynamis offers some of the healthiest black, brown, and red rice varieties from South Cotobato.

Untitled

This rice is grown bio dynamically, a certain animistic and spiritual approach to farming developed by Rudolph Steiner in the 1920’s. This philosophy aims to “create a diversified, balanced farm ecosystem that generates health and fertility as much as possible from within the farm itself.”

Untitled

The red and black rice are considered one of the best superfoods around. Black rice contains an antioxidant called anthocyanin, which causes the purple pigment in certain grapes or berries. Anthocyanins are said to promote cell growth.

MAMA SITA’S PREMIUM VINEGARS & FOOD (lower & upper floor)

Untitled

On the ground floor and upper floor we found artisanal vinegars by Mama Sita’s. The product that intrigued us most was the Cashew Vinegar (P200), which tasted a little like a less acidic Balsamic Vinegar.

Untitled

On the upper floor  was another Mama Sita’s booth where they sold their fiery Labuyo Pepper Sauce, Pork BBQ Marinade (with BBQ samples), and refreshing Santol Sherbet with a cone made with Job’s Tears (Adlai).

Untitled

For a new way to enjoy santol sherbet, we added a dash of hot pepper sauce. The sour notes of the bird’s eye chili worked surprisingly well with the natural flavors of the santol.

Going to Philippine Harvest was an eye-opening experience that made us re-evaluate our outlook on local products and agriculture. More often than not, consumers will overlook the source of their food and what it takes to procure it. It was great to see the food items outside of the supermarket and meet the very people who lovingly produced them.
