PHILIPPINE HARVEST is a partnership between the Department of Agriculture and SSI Group, Inc. that celebrates the richness of Filipino-made products. Over the course of weekend, more than twenty exhibitors made available hundreds of uniquely made food items, heirloom vegetables, grain varieties, spirits, wines, and all-natural cosmetics that utilize the abundance of the Philippines’ natural resources.
Here are our favorite exhibitors during the last show…

Jalee’s Farms produces guilt-free, organic Mushroom Chicharron that goes great with spiced vinegar.
We got a chance to taste free samples of their Garlic, BBQ flavors, and Pickled Mushroom Acharra at the booth.
The best flavors are the Garlic, Barbecue, and Peri-Peri. The small pouches go for P150 and the large ones at P290.
If you’re looking for a light, healthy, and revitalizing snack, look for Radical Organics’ coconut chips as a healthy alternative to potato crisps.
These toasted chips are flavored with natural coco sugar and a dash of salt. Other great flavors they have, while not available at the booth, are Salted and Chili & Lime.
DOWN TO EARTH GRASSFED BEEF
Down to Earth’s produce and meat products are sustainably sourced from the foothills of Mt. Kitanglad.
All micro vegetables, edible flowers, and other produce are grown in the most traditional way—organic and biodynamic with a consideration for nature.
Their grass-fed, free-range livestock and crossbreeds such as the Southern Yellow Cow and Local Black Pig are native to the region. Some of their products include native chickens, Canadian style bacon, and “healthier” steak cuts.

Bios Dynamis offers some of the healthiest black, brown, and red rice varieties from South Cotobato.
This rice is grown bio dynamically, a certain animistic and spiritual approach to farming developed by Rudolph Steiner in the 1920’s. This philosophy aims to “create a diversified, balanced farm ecosystem that generates health and fertility as much as possible from within the farm itself.”
The red and black rice are considered one of the best superfoods around. Black rice contains an antioxidant called anthocyanin, which causes the purple pigment in certain grapes or berries. Anthocyanins are said to promote cell growth.

MAMA SITA’S PREMIUM VINEGARS & FOOD (lower & upper floor)
On the ground floor and upper floor we found artisanal vinegars by Mama Sita’s. The product that intrigued us most was the Cashew Vinegar (P200), which tasted a little like a less acidic Balsamic Vinegar.
On the upper floor was another Mama Sita’s booth where they sold their fiery Labuyo Pepper Sauce, Pork BBQ Marinade (with BBQ samples), and refreshing Santol Sherbet with a cone made with Job’s Tears (Adlai).
For a new way to enjoy santol sherbet, we added a dash of hot pepper sauce. The sour notes of the bird’s eye chili worked surprisingly well with the natural flavors of the santol.
Coco Natura’s pure coco sugar is made from sap that is then processed like regular sugar, but minus the high glycemic index.
Regular sugar has a glycemic index of 100, while coco sugar is 35—making this ideal for diabetics.Other products they have are coco syrup and jam.

Going to Philippine Harvest was an eye-opening experience that made us re-evaluate our outlook on local products and agriculture. More often than not, consumers will overlook the source of their food and what it takes to procure it. It was great to see the food items outside of the supermarket and meet the very people who lovingly produced them.
