1. JAMON IBERICO DE BELLOTA
Arguably, Jamón Ibérico de Bellota is Spain’s most famed culinary gem!
The meat comes from free-range black Iberian pigs that have been fed wild grass and acorns (bellota). They are raised and cured in certain conditions that bring out this melt-in-your-mouth sweet and nutty flavor.
2. PAELLA
The iconic rice and seafood dish that traditionally originated in Valencia is a must try when visiting Barcelona!
I suggest you order their Seafood Paella or Paella Negra; Barcelona is known for its fresh seafood considering its seaside location.
The Seafood Paella is both stunning and delicious, usually prepared with crustaceans and shellfish.
Ours was topped with crayfish, shrimp, squid, and mussels!
My favorite is the Paella Negra. It’s made with squid ink or cuttlefish ink, which is added to the rice that gives the dish the color and its name. I was lucky to have a generous serving of squid.
I like pairing it with aioli sauce on the side for that extra kick!
Tip: The prices on the menu are per person with a minimum of two people for a plate.
3. SEAFOOD
Seafood lovers rejoice! Since Barcelona is a coastal city, you’ll find a good supply of freshly caught seafood!
It’s no wonder why many restaurants specialize and prepare their seafood dishes so well.
We ordered the massive mixed seafood platter, composed of mussel, bamboo shell, shrimp, crayfish, and squid!
Grilled and cooked in olive oil, you’ll find each ingredient to have a mouthwatering freshness in each bite!
4. PATATAS BRAVAS
My favorite potato dish is the Patatas Bravas, that’s a great appetizer in any tapas restaurant.
This seriously delicious dish combines crispy potato cubes that are fluffy on the inside with a smokey, spicy o paprika sauce and aioli dipping sauce.
They are delicious and best paired with a cold beer!
5. PAN CON TOMATE
Pan Con Tomate which translates as “bread with tomato” is one of the most common staples in Barcelona.
Its toasted bread rubbed with a mixture of tomato, garlic, olive oil, and salt. Simple but delicious!
You can practically find it everywhere that serves tapas!
6. PIMIENTOS DE PADRÓN
They’re served hot, fried in olive oil and sprinkled with sea salt.
Eating the pepper is like a game of Russian roulette, most of them taste salty sweet with a slight bitterness to them. But did you know 15% of every harvest is spicy hot, and because it’s so tasty people take their chances!
7. CROQUETAS
In Spain, these bites are traditionally served in bars and restaurants as a tapas dish.
Croquetas de Jamon are tasty Ham Croquettes that are filled, not with potatoes like the French version, but with a thick creamy bechamel sauce.
We also tried the squid ink croquettes that was equally appetizing.
8. TORTILLA DE PATATAS (potato omelette)
Tortilla De Patata (also known as the Spanish omelet) is a traditional comfort food in Spain.
One can imagine how such humble ingredients consisting of potatoes, eggs, onion, salt, and pepper can make such a tasty dish.
The tortilla is juicy and is usually fairly thick.
9. ACEITUNAS (olives)
Aceitunas are Spanish-style marinated black or green olives. The quality is very different from the ones we have at home in supermarkets.
The marinated olives retain some fruity and nice bitter flavors. The locals love it so much that you can find it in numerous markets, restaurants and tapas bars.
10. CAVA
A trip to Barcelona would not be complete without enjoying a fine glass of this refreshing beverage.
Cava referred to as “Spanish champagne”, is a sparkling wine that is the national drink of Catalunya. It comes in two main varieties – white and rosé; It is widely use when there is a celebration!
The bubbly drink is perfect for various seafood, tapas, and even dessert!
Overall, I love my tour with Devour! It’s not just about the food but also a history lesson about the origins and pairings of the dish.
The highlight for me was discovering the places that you would never find alone! Cheers!
