Beep! Beep! Raise your Glasses to the Jeepney Wine Tour Experience! (Photo Essay)

Jeepney Wine Tour by AWC Philippines, Inc. is a bar-hopping experience where wine-loving folks can enjoy their favorite bottle from different parts of the globe, where the mood is light, casual and friendly. Now on its third run, this year’s JWT participants will have the chance to discover wines from the USA, Spain, Argentina and France.

Wine lovers, get ready as there will be free-flowing wine as we hop around four different restos & bars in BGC while riding traditional jeepneys.

Our first stop was Gallery by Chele, where each person was given a Wine Glass Holder Necklace. We loved the hands free wine glass lanyard that was the perfect accessory for the wine tasting tour.

Each restaurant stop had a special menu specially designed for the Jeepney Wine Tour 2020. I didn’t know whether to get the wine or the oysters first. The creamy-milky oysters were a must. You could tell good quality oysters by their smell and their fresh, fatty and succulent taste.

1st stop: Gallery by Chele. Indigo Eyes wine from California, USA.
Indigo Eyes Chardonnay 2017
Indigo Eyes Sauvignon Blanc 2018
Indigo Eyes Pinot Noir 2017

Though we were encouraged to casually pair the three wines, I found the shellfish perfect with the Sauvignon Blanc given its nice, clean, fresh taste and citrusy notes.

Each participant was given casino chips that they could gamble away to earn more  stacks for the wine auction at the end of the event.

Playing Casino Du Vin was a fun way to learn more about wines. The first game—guessing whether it was white, red, rose, sparkly or still—was quite easy. For a novice wine drinker like me, the game took away the intimidating factor. But the second game was  hard as we had to guess from which country the wines have originated.

After 1 hour and 30 minutes, it was time to change location.

All aboard the colorful Philippine Jeepney! This year was their biggest yet, filling 4 jeepneys and 1 van with tipsy wine-loving participants.

Guests were also encourage to dress up in costumes representing the country of origin of each wine.

My favorite kind of wine pairing—cold cuts and cheese platter.

Our second stop was Las Flores, a modern Spanish restaurant famed for their authentic tasting tapas.

And what better wines to serve than those from the same country, Spain!

2nd stop: Las Flores. Bodegas Bilbainas from Rioja and Codorniu from Penedes both from Spain.
Anna de Codorniu Rose NV
Vina Pomal Blanco 2018
Vina Pomal Crianza 2016

Our third stop was 205 Bodega located in the Fort Strip. Chrymas from Drink Manila told me that she was really looking forward to the Malbec.

3rd stop: 205. Bodegas Septima from Mendoza, Argentina.
Septima Sauvignon Blanc 2019
Septima Malbec 2018
Septima Gran Reserva 2016

Chrysmas was right—the Malbec was our favorite wine, giving out great flavors of dark berries with a well-balanced tannin. It was a great wine to pair with 205’s Quatro Formaggi Pizza.

The wine tasting event ended at L’Entrecôte Bistro in Burgos Circle. The last venue felt like an after party. Everyone was already very tipsy and friendly while dancing and drinking some more.

4th stop: L’Entrecote. Trésors de Loire from Loire Valley and Ferraton from Rhone Valley, both from France.
Tresors de Loire Sancerre 2017
Tresors de Loire Vouvray 2017
Ferraton La Tournee Rouge 2017
Ferraton Saint-Joseph 2011

The crowd grew even more excited when the auction started with everyone making a bid to take home bottles of their favorite wines from the tour.

Yippee! We won three bottles of the Septima wine! Thanks to our new friends at the table who helped us pull all our chips together.

Congratulations to AWC for a very enjoyable and successful event! The JWT, coupled with good wine and food, was very fun and light, a great opportunity for wine lovers and novices to get to know more about wines. See you next year for the annual event! Cheers!
