Updated 2023 blog post: The Fatted Calf Reopens in Tagaytay! (First Look)

The Fatted Calf Farmhouse Kitchen is a farm-to-table destination restaurant by Jayjay and Rhea Sycip featuring locally sourced ingredients and desserts by Flour Pot Manila. Its name is inspired by the feast of the return of the prodigal son in Luke 15:23.
This is one of the best new restaurants that opened near the Tagaytay area!
First Things First

This is last November’s latest addition to the cool restaurant cluster in the Brgy. Bucal, Silang Cluster made popular by Bawai and Chateau Hestia, and it’s on the same street as Asiong’s.

The restaurant is designed with post-Covid safety protocols in mind: all al fresco, high ceiling and socially distant tables.

Chef Jayjay was trained at Le Cordon Bleu Thailand, and he held the position of Executive Chef at Discovery Country Suites before. He also worked with Chef Chele Gonzales at Vask while Pastry Chef Rhea worked at Discovery Primea.

The Fatted Calf Food

Loved the pillowy soft dinner rolls made from free range eggs and served with artisan butter from Cavite.

You could taste the crispy freshness of naturally-grown vegetables with the sweetness from the salad tomatoes and the tartness from cherry tomatoes. Topped with burrata sourced from Casa Del Formaggio in Negros.

The sisig terrine was surprisingly good, topped with a sweet raisin relish and small pipinito cucumber foraged nearby and soaked in sea salt and kaong vinegar (sukang arengga).

You could taste the flavor of oyster & shiitake. It was a bit salty though.

Make sure to pre-order their signature roasted leg of beef as highlight.

Their Batangas beef is so tender because it came from grass-fed female calf and freshly sourced from Mahogany market.

The sauce is beef jus demiglaze simmered in local rum and red wine.
The Flour Pot Desserts

The Flour Pot Manila by Rhea Castro-Sycip is an Ultimate Taste Test Masters 2018 winner for her Signature Butter Rum Cake, one of the best cakes during the pandemic.

The strawberry shortcake was sooo divine with its fluffy chiffon cake, light cream and luscious strawberries.

The Tres Leches was rich, but it was well-paired with the sweetness & sourness of the Benguet strawberries.

The tableya chocolate was rich and deep in flavor, highly recommended for pairing with the Commune Coffee they serve.
Final Thoughts

Overall, The Fatted Calf is one of the best new restaurants in the post-Covid era in Manila. This is worth the drive to the Silang-near-Tagaytay area, specially if you are craving for good food in a homey al fresco setting with all safety protocols in place.
Congratulations Chef Jayjay and Rhea Sycip for The Fatted Calf and Flour Pot Manila concepts!

P.S. The best time to go is on a Monday because the place is less crowded and traffic going there is lighter. Make sure to reserve and pre-order. There is parking in front of the resto.
