AUGhost: 500+ Days into the Pandemic

Welcome to the 2nd Issue of #MakeEverydayAwesome Newsletter by Our Awesome Planet!

Time flies so fast. We are now 500+ days into the pandemic and facing Season 3 of Manila’s Lockdown aka Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) this August 6. Being at home, we get to enjoy and see our kids grow throughout the quarantine season. We get to know their quirks, what they love and what makes them pikon. We get to have family lunch dates and dinner together and on weekends, endless movie nights.

I love this story from the gospel today.

At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.”

Matthew 14:27-33:

This pandemic will get worse before it gets better and we have to prepare mentally and spiritually with a focus on Christ and the loving support of our family and the community.

I’m focusing on creating a series on how to become a digital entrepreneur during this new economy. What works and what does not work? What are the new skills you need to learn? How can we teach the next Filipino Generation Z to thrive in a post-pandemic world.

Any suggestions?

Do you Believe in the AUGhost Month?

Chinese believes that ghosts roam the earth every August and this year it happens from August 8 to September 6. 2021. The spirits jailed in hell are paroled for 1 month during the 7th lunar month to feast on the people on earth.

No new businesses are started during this period and all contracts should be signed before the start of the ghost month. You have to be extra careful during this period because a lot of people die and are taken by ghosts. Coincidentally, the Delta surge is happening now and we need to make sure to get fully vaccinated and stay at home.

Some say this is also the best time to watch the latest horror series and most notably:

Fear Street Trilogy: Part One 1994, Part Two 1978, and Part Three 1666 by Netflix
Evil (TV Series) Season One and current Season Two streaming at Paramount+
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It by HBO MAX

I’m scared of watching horror movies but I justify it because I’m curious about how to win in a spiritual battle against the evil one. It is highly recommended that you are in the State of Grace when watching horror movies and to keep the sacramentals like holy water, holy oil, and holy salt around you to protect you.

I don’t believe in Ghost Month but it does not hurt to be extra careful during this time.

Best Gelato in Manila! #AwesomeCertified

Enjoy the cold fruity creamy gelato by the best gelato in Manila! @gelatomanila

We had fun shooting these babies with some of our rooftop0-grown dragon fruit, our neighbor’s manga, market-fresh avocado, and Ate Uday’s tapioca pearls.

✅ Mango Passion Fruit (vegan) – love the sweetness of the mango in contrast with the tartness of the passion fruit.

✅ Avocado (vegan) – we love eating it like an avocado overload with fresh avocado ala mode style. The gelato tastes like the avocado fruit itself – ang sarap!

✅ Dragon Fruit Sorbet (vegan) – the best dragon fruit sorbet we tried that is the closest to its fruity flavor. Add some fresh Dragon fruit slices for maximum enjoyment.

✅ Homemade Taho (vegan) – better than the chilled taho version and add your tapioca pearls to fix your taho craving!

The Story of Gelato Manila
by Zarah Manikan, Chef & CEO / Gelato Manila

Gelato Manila is a premium HOMEMADE gelato. Everything I conceptualize and put in the recipes is inspired, produced, and perfected at home for my loved ones (including close, close friends)! I am an R&D person at heart, a home baker through and through, and Gelato Manila is where my home recipes get made into products that I can share with everyone. Small batches, small quantities with very high labor and attention to detail.

When I started Gelato Manila, my two boys (15 and12) made the gelato with me, preparing ingredients, chopping fruits, churning and scooping, packing the gelato, and cleaning up. We were in lockdown and we made the most out of it, loving the production process and bonding together, just keeping positive and making the best of what we had. This is when we thought: our Gelato was truly homemade.
