
We judged three coffee cocktail creations @wofexph using Nespresso Finezzo, an Arabica light-roasted classic with floral notes and refreshing acidity. The contestants were experienced bartenders who used different spirits, fruit extracts, soda, syrup and their own secret ingredients.

At first, I thought this won’t go well because the drinks contradicted each other and maybe a tummy ache would follow after. One cocktail had a contrasting taste, the other one was too sweet, while the last one was perfect—like drinking a spiked coffee iced tea with a lazy beach breakfast vibe.

1st Barista Challenge

TV Anchor and veteran host, Lexi Schulze, kicked off the first-ever Nespresso Professional Barista Challenge.
This was an open competition where baristas were challenged to create winning coffee concoctions and demonstrate their skills in crafting coffee drinks to elevate the coffee experience of those who will have a taste of their creations.

The barista challengers used the Nespresso Momento 120 in creating their drinks.
Nespresso Philippines in-house Coffee Ambassador JR Abril provided a quick demo on how to maximize the Nespresso Momento NM100.

Using the NM100, challengers were tasked to create one coffee cocktail drink on the spot with Nespresso Finezzo Pro capsule, any Monin syrup and any 1 ingredient from the following:
- Dates
- Cardamom seeds
- Egg yolk
- Lemon / Lime
- Cola / Soda
Baristas were given 8 minutes to complete the coffee cocktail and serve the 3 judges.

The challengers were evaluated based on this set of criteria:
- Taste 30% – overall taste of the cocktail, how the ingredients complemented each other
- Uniqueness 20% – how different your cocktail is compared with the others
- Knowledge 20% – how challenger can describe his creation, make it appetizing for the audience and judges
- Preparation 15% – techniques, special skills or tools used
- Over all look 15% – layering of the drink

It was an honor to be one of the inaugural judges of the Nespresso Professional Barista Challenge together with:
JR ABRIL Full time Barista Coffee Master/Barista Trainer from 2011-2015. He also worked as Bar Manager in The Victorian Restaurant Dubai from 2015-2018. From 2019 up to the present time, he has been a Nespresso Coffee Ambassador.
FIONA TAN Country Manager of MONIN Singapore and the Coffee Innovation Manager of Monin Southeast Asia.

Eduard Catudio, bartender from Savage and Helm, stood out in the competition with this coffee cocktail made with rum, vermouth, tepachi, bitters and pandesal biscotti.

Pamahaw Ingredients: • Nespresso finezzo (lungo) • Diplomatic Rum • Rosso vermouth • Elder flower liqueur • Bitters (to balance) • Magic Salt • Monin Vanilla syrup • Lemon • Tepachi made from fermented pineapple skin • Garnish from flattened pandesal toast
