Bakmi Nyonya by Indonesian Lucy Garcia is our favorite Indonesian restaurant in Manila, featuring their family’s signature Bakmi Nyonya noodles and home-cooked recipes from her mom. Located at Assembly Grounds at the Rise (former location of Zubuchon), they’ve grown from winning The Next Big Food Entrepreneur competition in 2014 to expanding their stall in Pioneer, Food District in BGC, and now to a full-fledged restaurant in Makati.

“Bakmi Nyonya, the winner of The Next Big Food Entrepreneur competition, serves authentic Indonesian cuisine, notably their signature “Bakmi” noodles. Co-owners Lucy and Gershwin Garcia blend rich flavors with a variety of toppings, reflecting their cultural heritage. Their dishes, such as Bakmi Babi, shrimp dumplings, and spiced rice with sambal, have garnered widespread acclaim. Winning the competition has enabled them to share their culinary creations with a broader audience, honoring Lucy’s grandfather’s legacy and passion for food.”

Her Excellency Bartinah Ntombizodwa Radebe-Ntshitenzhe, Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa, and His Excellency Agus Widjojo, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia, officially opened Bakmi Nyonya Table on July 23. The grand opening featured a ribbon-cutting, gong ceremony, and the traditional cutting of the Indonesian Tumpeng Cake with nasi kuning (turmeric rice).

Tumpeng is a traditional Indonesian celebratory dish featuring nasi kuning, or turmeric rice, shaped into a cone and surrounded by an assortment of seven side dishes such as vegetables and various meats. The cone shape symbolizes gratitude, the celebration of life’s abundance, and acknowledging God at the center of the community.
To properly cut a tumpeng, the person of honor or host starts by slicing the base of the cone (often mistakenly starting at the tip), symbolizing the heavens descending to meet the community. This portion is placed on a plate with all the side dishes and then presented to the guest of honor.
Some of Lucy’s heirloom recipes from her mom are exclusively available at Bakmi Nyonya Table, including her signature Bakmi Nyonya Noodles and other Indonesian comfort foods.
AUTHENTIC INDONESIAN FOOD

Gado-Gado (₱280)
Mixed leafy vegetables salad with tangy peanut sauce dressing.
This is our favorite vegetable salad, featuring corn and egg, served with a homemade peanut dressing made from scratch and finished with a splash of kalamansi. Sarap!

Their kropeck is really good, whether you choose the shrimp or vegetarian version, especially with a bit of sambal.

Soto Ayam Lamongan (₱250)
Chicken soup, infused with turmeric and a blend of spices.
The chicken soup is quite rejuvenating, served hot with bits of chicken in a herby, turmeric-infused broth. The soup is served and poured separately.

Sate Kulit Ayam (₱190 – 3 sticks). Grilled chicken skin satay.
Sate Maranggi (₱280 – 3 sticks). Tender beef skewers with a unique blend of spices and seasonings.
The Indonesian skewers are compact and full of flavor, making them perfect to pair with nasi kuning or nasi goreng.

Make sure to try their sambal and take a bottle home to add spice to your home-cooked meals. Try the different sambal like Oelek with Salted Fish or Squid Peta, or the Jalapeno Terasi.

Ayam Goreng Bumbu (₱380)
Deep fried chicken topped with a special 14-spiced flake mixture.
This is the Indonesian version of fried chicken, topped with a variety of fried spices.

Rendang Jawa (₱410)
Tender beef chunks cooked till caramelized in a unique fusion of herbs, spices and coconut milk.
The beef is quite tender and comes with a thick coconut gravy sauce, making it perfect to pair with white rice. Yum!

Nasi Goreng Kampoeng Sate Ayam (₱420)
Our traditional Indonesian fried rice with chicken satay served with sambal and pickle.
Most of the meats pair well with traditional fried rice, served with egg and sambal.

Udang Sauce Padang (₱410)
Stir-fried shrimp in padang-style sauce.
Love these big shrimp served in a sweet, spicy-hot sauce with onions and garlic. Maanghang!

Aloevera Quencher (₱180)
This aloe vera drink can surely relieve the spiciness and refresh your palate.
FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall, we love how Indonesian food is rich in umami flavors from different herbs, pairing perfectly with rice and sambal. Our favorites include Gado Gado, Rendang Jawa, Soto Ayam Lamongan, and various Sates Kulit Ayam (chicken) or Maranggi (beef). You can now enjoy this food in an authentic Indonesian ambiance, from the tables and chairs to the interior decor, in an air-conditioned, alfresco-like dining environment. It’s a legit place to satisfy your Indonesian food cravings or to explore Southeast Asian flavors.

Congratulations to Lucy and Gershwin and the entire Bakmi Nyonya team on your 10th anniversary and the grand opening of your first full-service restaurant, Bakmi Nyonya Table, at Assembly Grounds at the Rise!
