ORIGINE: Handpicked Boutique Wines for Your Next Celebration

Origine, sister company of Sommelier Selection, brings to Manila over 100+ artisan wines from 60 traditional estates across Europe and South Africa, each one celebrating authenticity, terroir, and a story in every bottle. Since we didn’t really grow up with a wine culture here, the best way to learn is to sip, explore, and discover these wines as if you were traveling through the vineyards yourself.

STALL 1

Origine is located at Stall 1 in The Grid, Rockwell, where you can sample boutique wines by the glass or in half-bottles before bringing them home to enjoy at your next celebration.

They offer over 100 wine labels, each with its own story of boutique vineyards, their origins, and unique terroir.

Each label comes with its own tasting notes and suggested pairings, with prices ranging from ₱2,000 to ₱5,000 per bottle.

We had the chance to chat with Jerome Philippon to learn more about the wines and labels they carry, and even asked for his recommendations on the best bottles to bring to Christmas celebrations.

Sommelier consultant Brian Devaux presented four Spanish wines, perfectly paired with tapas from Stall 19 La Bikini by Miguel Vecin. We also asked him for his recommendations on wines to bring for Christmas celebrations in Manila.

SPARKLING

Sparkling wines are always a party favorite—they’re approachable, a great conversation starter, and the go-to choice when people are in a celebratory mood. Beyond Champagne, Origine also offers a curated selection of sparkling wines to enjoy.

Azimut Cava (Penedès, Spain)
Organic sparkling that’s crisp, dry, and elegant with citrus, white fruit, floral, and subtle toasty notes. Best with seafood, tapas, fried foods, or soft cheeses.

I often spot this cava in Spanish restaurants, and I love how it’s bubbly, crisp, and not sweet.

Tenuta Civranetta Spumante Brut (Veneto, Italy)
Organic Prosecco (100% Glera) with fine bubbles, floral and citrus aromas, and a crisp, balanced palate. Great with seafood, soft cheeses, and light savory bites.

A highly recommended organic Prosecco with fine bubbles that gently awaken the palate.

WHITE WINE

Leirana Albariño (Rías Baixas, Galicia, Spain)
Mineral-driven with citrus, apple, peach, floral, and saline notes and crisp acidity. Perfect with shellfish, grilled fish, and light seafood.

I love how balanced and easy to drink this Albariño from Galicia is, best paired with manchego.

The Green Hill Organic Riesling (Rheinhessen, Germany)
Dry and mineral with aromas of wet stone, ripe apricot, peach, lemon zest, herbal nuance, and creamy spice. Ideal with sushi, roasted garlic chicken, or creamy pasta.

Brian Devaux: recommends this organic German Riesling as the perfect match for appetizers or light dishes at your next celebration.

Beaujolais Blanc Classic Chardonnay (Domaine des Terres Dorées, France)
Fresh and mineral with stone fruit, citrus, and floral notes. Best with fish, goat cheese, or as a crisp aperitif.

Jerome Philippon: recommends this French Chardonnay as a perfect match for lechon, its crispness cutting through the richness of the roasted pig.

RED WINE

Envínate Lousas Viñas de Aldea 2021 (Ribeira Sacra, Galicia, Spain)
Mineral-driven Mencía blend with bright red fruit, floral and herbal notes, fresh acidity, and fine tannins. Best with lamb, pork, charcuterie, or earthy mushroom dishes.

I love that the wines at Origine are unique, and it’s fun to discover the stories behind each one—like the delicate Mencía blend from Galicia.

Lanzaga (Rioja, Spain)
Organic Tempranillo-based blend with ripe red and black fruits, herbal and balsamic notes, polished tannins, and a savory finish. Ideal with roasted lamb, beef, game, charcuterie, or aged cheeses.

This Tempranillo wine is well-balanced, with moderate acidity and soft tannins, making it an easy-drinking companion for meat dishes.

Casa Castillo El Molar 2021 (Jumilla, Spain)
An organic, 100% Garnacha red with floral, red and black fruit, and herbal notes, offering fresh acidity and a smooth finish, ideal with grilled meats, cheeses, and hearty Mediterranean dishes.

Château Falfas “Les Demoiselles de Falfas” 2022 (Côtes de Bourg, Bordeaux, France)
Ripe black and red fruit with spice and floral tones, medium-to-full body, firm tannins, and bright acidity. Pairs beautifully with roast beef, lamb, game meats, or hearty stews.

Jerome Philippon: recommends this Bordeaux as the standout red to impress gastronomes at any celebration.

La Roque Malbec (Cahors, France)
Intense dark and red berry fruit (raspberry, blackberry) with earthy, mineral, and forest floor notes; fine tannins and a rich yet fresh palate. Great with grilled meats, hearty stews, or aged cheeses.

Brian Devaux: recommends this 2022 Malbec, decanted an hour before serving, as an approachable red that pairs beautifully with steaks and other meats.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I was surprised to discover Origine at The Grid, offering a curated selection of organic, biodynamic, and naturally fermented wines. In a city still developing its wine culture, it makes learning about wine approachable, with tasting by the glass, carafe, or half-bottle—perfect for bringing unique, impressive bottles to celebrations instead of the usual supermarket picks.

Thanks to Jerome and Brian for inspiring us to explore boutique, organic, naturally fermented wines—each with its own story to tell.

I encourage you to explore the wines that speak to you—visit Origine at The Grid.
