a Fleur de Lys Discounted Experience

By

Who can resist a 10% discount coupon for a foodie person like me who have never been to Fleur de Lys? So, we headed to Tomas Morato to get our taste of Fleur de Lys. Thanks to Lori for offering this discount to all DCF readers this month of August. Hmmn…. I was wondering when could I ever give a discount like that through OAP (naks). (Mental note: I should try using that acronym some more…) I also have a lot of readers who continuously recommend Fleur de Lys.

Unfortunately, the famous strawberry pie was not available and we were not able to try out the meringue dessert, Pavlova Picasso. So we were left with the Jackie Ang-po’s best sellers: Macademia pie, the Next Best Thing, and the latest, Dulce & Gabanna tart. The names were indeed interesting and the first time I realized that the names plus presentation could influence your taste buds. At the end of the meal, we did not find the desserts particularly special. Maybe it is just me. But I wouldn’t drive to this place all the way from Makati. Certainly, it is the best dessert place so far in the Tomas Morato area since i don’t frequent this area so often.

Fleur De Lys is located beside the Belo medical clinic (what a good complement), and in front of Virgin Cafe. The counter is quite small and the desserts greet you with open arms as you enter. The pink menus are very engaging and you can see the entire place was designed to lure you and you will easily give in to the temptation.

Roasted Macadamia Nuts… Light Caramel Syrup… with my favorite, Pistachio Ice Cream — who can resist that?

Nuts About You (Macadamia Nut Pie with Pistachio Ice Cream) — P108 / slice. P98 net with a DCF coupon 🙂

We like this better than the other two. I really love the macadamia + pistachio taste! Although the thin crust was crunchy, we felt that it lack in taste.

When I look at this photo, there is an urge inside me to take the chocolate cake out of her loneliness. It tells you, hey I’m the last of my kind and I’m the best seller in the house.

The Next Best Thing (Warm Chocolate Cake with french vanilla ice cream) — P108 / slice. P98 net with a DCF coupon 🙂

Nothing special. We were expecting that the warm cake together with the cold vanilla ice cream would be a good complement, but it failed to meet expectations. Well I must admit, maybe it is unfair to compare this with Lemuria’s Valrohna chocolate souffle cake.

Dulce & Gabanna tart – P95/ slice. P85 net with a DCF coupon.

We only liked the banana inside.

Bonus! Behind the scenes shoot… Aidan is about to attack!

Overall, the experience was OK and I was hoping to taste the strawberry pie and meringue dessert next time.

  1. Here’s a tip for your sweet tooth: Forget Me Not’s Dulce de Leche Cheesecake – available at Hot Rocks Grill (!), Club 650 in Libis. It’s the compound right after Shopwise. And may I also recommend Hot Rocks’ steaks? As the resto says, “no frills, just good food” – and with an excellent dessert to boot! And while you’re there, you might as well try Oks Manok’s chicken inasal. Malasa hanggang sa loob!

  2. Actually, Fleur De Lys didn’t do it for me. Looks better than it tastes. Forgettable pa nga that’s why the coupons didn’t excite me.

  3. It’s so-so for me. Nothing great. But at least there’s the distinction! 🙂 Maybe I ought to try it again. Since I am not a chocolate lover – I am at the losing end. Anyhoo, I’ll try the place again since you and Lori Of DCF recommended it.. 🙂 Cheers!

  4. Hi there! Thanks for mentioning me in this blog. Please inform your readers that Forget Me Not Specialty cakes will be leaving Hot Rocks soon and will be moving to #60 Broadway st (in between 12th and 13th street), New Manila, Quezon City with phone number 7232776. I hope to see the lovers of the Dulce de Leche cheeesecake and Brazo de Remedios there. Thanks and more power to the Awesome planet 🙂

  5. We’ve heard so much about Fleur de Lys because of its “famous” chef/ owner and have been wanting to try out the place for a long time. We were so excited to finally have the chance to try it today. Result? Very disappointing!!!
The ground floor was not a welcome sight for a dessert place. The stairway leading to the second floor was quite un-friendly with the high steps that you had to take. The dining area was cramp.
We ordered the Venus- their version of the Tiramisu. The first bite released a burst of syrup because of the over-soaked cake base. We asked the waiter if this was really how the cake was supposed to be (while pressing the cake to show him how syrup oozed out). He said “bagong-gawa po siguro iyan.” He then went down to ask somebody from the kitchen and came back with “ganyan daw po talaga ‘yan kasi coffee-base cake po ‘yan.” Hahaha!!! What a laugh! There’s not even a slightest hint of coffee/ coffee liqueur in it. The coffee served to us was not freshly brewed and had a “sour” after taste. Anybody who loves coffee would know what I am talking about. It was like the coffee was just re-heated and not even the creamer would dissolve in it. I wonder if both the cake and the coffee would pass Ms. Jackie Ang-Po’s taste buds.
We decided not to finish the “Venus and coffee” and leave the place (in less than 10 minutes of being seated there) so as not to ruin our very delicious and wonderful lunch experience in the nearby 145F wherein we had Angus Baby Back Ribs.
Verdict: DISAPPOINTING. THE PLACE SUCKS. WASTED P285.00. NOT TO GO BACK AGAIN. NOT TO RECOMMEND TO FRIENDS.

  6. The old lady who always goes there an hour before it closes on weekends is F-ing rude to customers. I know they close 1am on a Saturday. If they want their customers to leave, they can say it nicely, “last orders” na po kami ma’am/sir. meron pa po ba kayong gusto? Or We’ll be closing in 30..15 mins, said in a nice way. Hindi yung titingnan ka nung matandang babae na may kasamang irap na obviously sinasabi ng mata na di pa ba kayo aalis?

  7. The old lady I assume is one of the owners of the cafe kasi we always see her checking some notebooks at the reception etc. Probably the mom of the jackie ang-po

  8. Your review didn’t do justice to the next best thing. I felt that the chocolate was so rich and it practically melts in your mouth.I know a lot of people who love the next best thing… So here i am, representing them!
