Osteria Daniele BGC: Kicking Off the Osteria Game in Manila

Osteria is a casual Italian neighborhood bistro that serves simple pasta, meat specialties (definitely no pizza) and wine. Osteria Daniele, named after one of the partners of the Bistronomia group of Rambla fame, kicks off the battle of Osteria in Manila.

Here’s what our team thinks of Osteria Daniele in Manila…

First Things First

Osteria Daniele commands a warm striking presence on the corner of 9th and 26th with high ceilings, cathedral windows and casual elegant vibe.

Osteria Daniele Menu: Affettati E Formaggio, Antipasti, Insalata E Zupper | Pasta E Risotto, Pesce, Carne

You’ll love the Spanish Pablo Peyra Studio-designed interiors with a bar centerpiece and banquet tables.

This is the narrow window-seat table that can be set up for a group of 10. (The toilet is at the end.)

We tried Uri’s favorites with Team OAP and partners from Executive Resources. Here’s what we think…

Antipasti

Spherical Olives (₱50). Marinated in extra virgin olive oil
Olive Miste (₱295). Mixed Marinated Italian Olives.

The olives have a way of transporting you into the Mediterranean.

Negroni (₱495). Bombay Sapphire, Campari, Mancino Rosso, orange bitters, grapefruit bitters. Aperol Spritzer (450). Aperol, Schweppes Soda Water, prosecco
Negroni (₱495). Bombay Sapphire, Campari, Mancino Rosso, orange bitters, grapefruit bitters. Aperol Spritzer (₱450). Aperol, Schweppes Soda Water, prosecco.

Bistronomia is known for its great classic cocktail line-up, so order one as you wait for your group.

Affettati: Coppa Medaglia d'Oro (₱575/50g), Bresaola Della Valtellina (₱680/50g), Formaggio: Montasio (₱495/50g), Gorgonzola (₱495/50g)

Instead of a set platter, pick 2 from each of the cold cut and cheese selections to start on a healthy note.

Terre Gaie Claris Pinot Grigio, delle Venezie · Italy (vivino rating 3.7).

Drinks Menu: Caffe | Lemons | Classico | Innovazione | Gin E Tonic | Vino Al Bicchiere | Prosecco | Blanco | Rosso 1 | Rosso 2 | Rosso 3

If you are in the mood for wine, start with Blanco, and select a bottle from their extensive selection of Rosso.

Vitello Tonnato (₱595). Roast beef with tuna mayo and capers
Vitello Tonnato (₱595). Roast beef with tuna mayo and capers.

This is a Filipino favorite—a pinkish roast beef topped with a creamy layer of tuna mayo that invokes childhood memories.

Carpaccio di Tonno (₱495). Tuna carpaccio, orange, celery, pineputs, basil mayo.
Carpaccio di Tonno (₱495). Tuna carpaccio, orange, celery, pineputs, basil mayo.

A thin layer of raw tuna topped with bits of tomato, herbs, orange and basil mayo. Try this instead of the beef.

Polpo alla Griglia (₱995). Grilled octopus, roasted carrot orzotto, gremolata
Polpo alla Griglia (₱995). Grilled octopus, roasted carrot orzotto, gremolata.

Perfectly-grilled Octopus tentacles served on a bed of barley orzo served ala-risotto. So good!

Insalata E Zuppe

Burrata (₱995). Smoked burrata, prosciutto, anchovies
Burrata (₱995). Smoked burrata, prosciutto, anchovies.

The burrata is imported and not as good as the ones that are locally-sourced. Ok to skip.

Cioppino (₱490). Clams, mussels, shrimp, squid, barramundi in a seafood stew
Cioppino (₱490). Clams, mussels, shrimp, squid, barramundi in a seafood stew.

Finally, a properly done Italian seafood stew in Manila. You’ll love it!

Pasta E Risotto

We tried a few pasta dishes, and here are tips to elevate your pasta game when dining here:

Orecchiette (₱495). Bowl-shaped pasta, Italian Sausage with creamy nduja sauce.
Orecchiette (₱495). Bowl-shaped pasta, Italian Sausage with creamy nduja sauce.

Hands-down the winner of the battle of the pasta because of the spicy nduja sauce, pasta resembling a deflated bilo-bilo and Italian sausage to complete it.

Capellini Neri (₱450). Squid ink pasta, baby squid, clams, garlic, chili
Capellini Neri (₱450). Squid ink pasta, baby squid, clams, garlic, chili.

We also loved this thin squid ink pasta with generous servings of squid and clams. Ang sarap!

Gnocchetti (₱530). Potato gnocchi with gorgonzola cheese, spinach and walnuts
Gnocchetti (₱530). Potato gnocchi with gorgonzola cheese, spinach and walnuts.

The gnocchi was a bit heavy. Order this if you like a creamy cheesy sauce.

Bucatini alla Carbonara (₱695). Thick and long pasta, pecorino cheese, guanciale, fresh egg yolk
Bucatini alla Carbonara (₱695). Thick and long pasta, pecorino cheese, guanciale, fresh egg yolk.

Fat carbonara-flavored noodles with tasty guanciale, some pecorino and egg yolk for added creaminess. Just OK.

Tortelli di Zucca (₱350). Tortellini filled pumpkin, amaretti cookies with truffle cream sauce.
Tortelli di Zucca (₱350). Tortellini filled pumpkin, amaretti cookies with truffle cream sauce.

This dim sum-looking pasta was a bit too sweet because of the pumpkin.

Risotto al Limone (₱950). Lemon and saffron risotto, seared foie
Risotto al Limone (₱950). Lemon and saffron risotto, seared foie.

Citrusy moist risotto. Best to eat with a bit of the foie gras.

Capellini tartufo (₱650). Fresh Truffle Pasta
Capellini tartufo (₱650). Fresh Truffle Pasta.

This looked good on the menu and in terms of presentation, but the pasta was soft or overcooked. Order with caution.

PESCE & CARNE

The salmon was served with a smoky reveal to make it exciting to eat.

Salmone al Forno (₱795). Roasted salmon, eggplant, capers, and black olives butter sauce.
Salmone al Forno (₱795). Roasted salmon, eggplant, capers and black olives butter sauce.

If you like your salmon soaked with Mediterranean flavors.

The highlight of the Osteria Daniele meal was the porchetta served table-side and sliced by the chef.

Porchetta (₱1,995). Crunchy roasted pork belly.
Porchetta (₱1,995). Crunchy roasted pork belly.

So good with crunchy skin, but the belly was a bit too fatty for me.

Costolette di Agnello alla Milanese (₱1,850). Lamb rack, carrot puree, lamb sauce
Costolette di Agnello alla Milanese (₱1,850). Lamb rack, carrot puree, lamb sauce.

The lamb was a hit, cooked with a bloody pinkish center but served with crusted skin. Yum yum!!

Dolce

At night, the light is dimmed to set the romantic bar mood to end the night.

Baba Napoletano (₱285). Soft cake, mango jam, vanilla cream, rum
Baba Napoletano (₱285). Soft cake, mango jam, vanilla cream, rum.

The flaming baba is good if you like your dessert instagrammable, but I still prefer mine great-tasting.

Semifreddo alla Fragola (₱350). Frozen strawberry mousse, orange, pistachio
Semifreddo alla Fragola (₱350). Frozen strawberry mousse, orange, pistachio.

The best dessert of the night—not to sweet with ice cream-like texture.

Tiramisu (₱395). Mascarpone mousse, disaronno, coffee cake, cacao
Tiramisu (₱395). Mascarpone mousse, disaronno, coffee cake, cacao.

Properly done Tiramisu to cap your Italian night.

Panna Cotta (₱250). Panna cotta, marinated pears in red wine
Panna Cotta (₱250). Panna cotta, marinated pears in red wine.

The panna cotta itself was quite good. We had a debate over the red wine-soaked pears.

Final Thoughts

Overall, we love Osteria for its casual elegant vibe, Rambla-quality cocktails with curated wine selections and good quality Italian food.

Our favorites are Vitello Tonnato and Polpo alla Griglia for Antipasti, Cioppino for the soup, Orecchiette  and Capellini Neri for the pasta, Costolette di Agnello alla Milanese for the meat and Semifreddo alla Fragola for dessert.

Budget 2,000/head for the meal + drinks. It’s better to go with a group, and make sure to order the right dishes to make your every peso count.

Best to reserve the coveted banquette tables (good for 6) for a romantic cozy feel.
