Finally, a garlic-themed restaurant showcasing the different flavors of garlic has opened in Manila. The Bistro group (think Friday’s) got the great insight that Filipinos love garlic. In fact, my friend Ardy had a garlic-themed restaurant concept before, but it just never materialized.
We loved the taste of Krazy Garlik’s dishes, but don’t expect full-on garlic flavors. That was a bit tempered maybe because they don’t want diners to have overpowering garlic breath afterwards.
The ambiance is bistro-ish, where you can hang out and enjoy loud music, with MTV playing in the background. It has an open kitchen set-up and the waiters are trained Friday’s-style. If you ask them for recommendations, they will tell you their favorites and give a subtle hint to upsell you to their more expensive dishes.
There is also a bar set-up and a backlit photo mural telling the story of a Garlik wonderland. The aisles are very narrow and poorly designed. There seems to be a gloomy mood to the restaurant, but the waiters do a great job of perking up the ambiance.

The dishes are expensive — prices are similar to the other restos of the Bistro franchise.
Apple Carrot Twitter (P180). Red Apple, Carrot, Garlic Syrup
Brain Buster (P180). Red Apple, Celery, Spinach, Garlic Syrup, Lemon-lime Soda
Travel Sickness (P180). Red Apple, Kiwi Fruit, Strawberries, Ginger Root
We fell for the healthy drink upsell. For close to P200, you pay for a simple fruit/vegetable juice. The server persuaded us to try their signature garlic syrup ingredient, but we couldn’t actually taste it anymore. Paying for these drinks felt like highway robbery, but we just justified it in our minds that they’re healthy anyway.
Parma Ham Roulade (P545). Prosciutto stuffed with buffalo mozzarella and cherry tomatoes, garnished with basil pesto and roasted garlic cloves.
I liked the combination of bland mozzarella with just the right saltiness of prosciutto.
Mushroom Matsuri (P345). A festival of mushrooms sauteed Japanese-style.
For vegetarian or healthy eaters out there, we recommend this flavorful mushroom dish. Each mushroom had the right “bite” and absorbed the flavor of the sauce well.
The dishes were served in garlic clove-shaped plates.
Sweet Sour Calamari (P295). Deep-fried squid with vegetables in special sauce.
The squid was cooked well (not too chewy) despite the size. The sauce was not too sweet and was just right. I liked the big slices of onions and bell pepper that came with it.
Hara-Kiri Krazy Rice (P365 +10%sc). The house special spicy fried rice with chillies, octopus, shrimps, and bacon. Good for 2-3 persons.
The Sweet Sour Calamari went perfectly well with the Hara-Kiri Rice, as recommended by our server, Helen. The rice was slightly spicy and had big pieces of the octopus, shrimps and bacon. A bit on the heavy side.
Garlicky Crispy Pata (P595 +10%sc). Deep-fried pork leg topped with fried garlic in olive oil.
The Crispy Pata was ordinary. You could just buy crispy pata at Barrio Fiesta, sprinkle it with fried garlic, and top it with garlic cloves to replicate this dish.
I noticed that the execution of the garlic-themed dishes is somewhat superficial. Sometimes, I think they just put a roasted garlic bulb or cloves to make the dish conform to the garlic theme; or they just top the dishes with garlic instead of including the garlic in the flavor of the dishes. I guess they want to be safe in terms of flavor, but I do hope they offer dishes that truly glorify the full flavor of garlic.
Garlik Glove Mascot (P350-small, P650-big). Of course, a themed restaurant is not complete without a mascot. 🙂
Some Krazy Suggestions:
1. Maybe they can feature dishes from where the garlic comes from. For example, offer dishes with Batanes Garlic, which has a very concentrated garlicky flavor despite its small size.
2. Have mouthwash options in the restroom so that customers won’t have to worry about their after-meal breath and just really get to enjoy the garlic dishes.
3. Have different levels of garlic dishes (like different levels of spiciness). Maybe there are dishes out there that have super-garlicky-flavors that showcase the wonderful taste of garlic. 🙂
4. Get Ivy and Cynthia Almario to create the interiors of the next themed restaurant.

Disclosure: Nothing to disclose. We paid for our meals and we don’t know anybody from the Bistro group.
P.S. We got the Parma Ham Roulade as a mobile coupon promotion from their website. Don’t forget to subscribe to their list at www.KrazyGarlik.com.

We went back after for dinner with the family 🙂
Did get to try the Vegetarian Shepherds Pie, its good, has an asian taste, full of vegetables inside 🙂
Everyone liked the food.
Their calamari aioli though was just a copy of the Fish&Co calamari but still a favorite of my daughter.
They couldnt give us a discount yet for the BFF card since they didnt have the machine to validate but they gave us a free desert of our choice instead. We tried the Chocolate Cake with Ice Cream, simple decadent cake. It came with 2 candied garlic bits, very unique but yummy.
I agree the garlic is not as full on as some garlic lovers would like it to be. Maybe they can offer varying ‘levels’ of garlic, like full on for those who love it, to the mild as they serve it currently.
They also gave us free pizza coupons for our next visit, sayang 🙂
Good food, good taste, would definitely go back.
Wish they had more vegetarian dishes though.
San yung pic na may garlic plush toys, cute yun 🙂
aww… expensive 🙁
Do you remember that wonderful garlic resto in Malate called Garlic Rose? They were ahead of their time. Hope someone brings it back, together with the original menu!
Btw, chewing on parsley is the best way to get rid of garlic breath. : )
i’m seconding the motion to bring back GARLIC ROSE,
and CAFE’ CARIBANA next door too : )
and while i’m at it,
bring back the charming old malate!!!
before the korean and videoke invasion : (
the mushroom dish looks soooo yummy.
I don’t know, bland food (and hence, unjustified prices) are pretty much par for the course in Bistro restaurants. Too bad, a garlic-themed restaurant is a promising concept and could’ve been done better.
Concept is nice but execution just lacks on interior and food… I’m sure these servings are too small for me…
Nothing special imo….
Hi Pam, oo nga I totally forgot about Garlic Rose already… I wonder who is the owner of that resto?
haha, I was not planning to publish that photo… for our own viewing lang 🙂
Had merienda there a month a ago. I find the interiors kinda chopsuey. The backlit mural didnt match up with the modern interiors. The menu looked like it was done in a hurry because it was full of clip art from the internet. In regards with the food, the salpicao was bland and lacked that garlic taste that i was looking for. The only dish we ordered that struck me the most was the garlic topped with anchovies. Though parang tinipid nila yung anchovies. The cheese fondue was ok nothing rave about. I agree…the servings are small and too expensive.
Ditto on Garlic Rose and Malate.
Manila Boy, You are on target! Yes please bring back the old Malate!
Nothing special about their gambas or salpicao. We’ve had better versions at non-garlic themed restaurants. Their Lobster Tails with Risotto should be renamed Risotto garnished with Lobster Tailettes.
For me, what was most memorable about this place were the huge mutant flies all over the place. The waiters just smiled when they saw us disgusted with the flies. Food was totally forgettable. Bistro food seems to be going downhill. Club sandwich we ordered at Friday’s recently had dry stale bread. 🙁
Too expensive for such crappy food!
