Defending the Caveman is a straight play starring Joel Trinidad, who shares the nuances between men and women, with the hope that we understand each other a little better.
It kicks off with a funny marriage intro video, and introduces the photo of a 25,000-year-old carving of The Great Goddess of Laussel discovered in 1911 plus the 17,000-year-old prehistoric drawings of a man and bison discovered in the Lascaux Cave in France in 1940.
The arguments are founded on the idea that men are hunters and women are gatherers by nature. This dictates a lot of our behavior even in the modern age.
There was never a dull moment listening to Joel defend the male sex for almost 90 minutes (no intermission). 🙂
Defending the Caveman felt like a marriage counseling session encapsulated in a play or a heads up for would-be couples.
We could sense that a lot of people — including us — could relate to it with the unending laughter, applause and pa-simple nudge to a significant other.
It does not make sense to watch it alone, and it is best experienced together with your wife or girlfriend.
It’s also a subtle way to explain to your partner your little quirks, like the sacred circle of underwear or your quiet-but-long moments in the bathroom.
I liked the part where Joel touched on how women can seem to instinctively find anything or have a gut feel on where lost things are at home. I often ask where things are, and I would sometimes get a sarcastic reply “to look with your eyes and not with your mouth”. At the end of it all, the wifey can always find whatever it is I’m looking for.
Honestly, with this play, I learned a lot in appreciating the other sex. It gave insightful tips on why compliments are important and lessons on engagement rules in the bedroom.
How I wish I watched this play when we got married 9 years ago…

Coming from a background in stand-up comedy, Rob Becker wrote Defending the Caveman over a three-year period during which he made an informal study of anthropology, prehistory, psychology, sociology and mythology.
