BURROW CAFE ANTIPOLO: Best Underground Cafe in Manila! (A Review)

Burrow Cafe is one of the hottest al fresco cafe destinations in Antipolo notably during the pandemic. It is situated underground within Vitty & Marie Gutierrez‘s Antipolo Bee House located in Beverly Hills Subdivision. The cafe blossomed during this particular time, especially with Chef Danilo Puga (formerly of Mince) at the helm. Chef Danilo’s new creations keep the menu vibrant, with diners wanting to go back for more.

We recently tried it again during the Valentine season, and found that it has gone a long way from its 2017 beginnings. Here’s what to expect…

About Burrow Cafe

It’s an adventure in itself to discover this place. Always remember that it is only open during the day for brunch and dinner—strictly by reservation only.

It is a steep climb down from the entrance going to the entry point, a consideration if you want to go with senior members of the family. There is no facade, just greens surrounding the cafe which worked well especially during the quarantine.

Burrow Menu: Starters, Salad, All Day Breakfast, All Day Lunch,
Vegan, Kids Menu, Sourdough Pizza, Desserts, Beverages
Deli, Dips & Sauces, Pantry Menu

As you enter this underground cafe, the ambiance is vibrant with big open windows surrounded by the forest.

There’s a lot of breathing space—a seating area with a capacity of 30 in the main dining hall and a private dining area with a capacity of 10. They also accept weddings and special events for a maximum seating of 50.

Burrow Cafe Dining

Sourdough Bread (700g – ₱270) Made fresh, contains no preservatives, sugar, eggs or dairy. Perfect with our bacon jam, dips and spreads
with Basil Pesto Cream Cheese (100g – ₱235)

Vitty was able to master their sourdough bread during the pandemic. You can order a loaf of sourdough and get a bottle of the basil pesto cream cheese to start your meal at Burrows.

Truffled Mushroom Soup (₱365). Shiitake, Button, Oyster

Loved the soup. You can really taste the flavor of the mushroom made from a mix of shiitake, button and oysters.

House Rolls, Assortment of Spreads (₱335). Basil, Sun-dried Tomato, Chorizo, Pimiento

Their house roll is a good bread option for you to try their different cream cheese spreads, of which the Basil Pesto is our favorite still. Pair it with the pimiento.

Santiago Beer Ipu-Ipo (₱220) India Pale Ale

The craft beer makers were heavily punished by the pandemic so it was awesome to see an India Pale Ale by Antipolo-based Santiago Beer and be able to support our craft beer brewers. 🙂 The brew was refreshingly good, perfect to start afternoon conversations.

No Meat Taco (₱420). Refried Beans, Cilantro Tomato Salsa, Cashew Sour Cream

Marie was proud of their growing vegan options, and this no meat one-bite taco did not disappoint. You can enjoy their vegan menu lineup which includes a meatless burger and mushroom cauliflower rice.

Classic Caesar salad (₱595). Santol Wood Smoked Bacon, Croutons, Parmesan

A salad of fresh vegetables with Caesar dressing and their very own smoked bacon is a healthy way to start the meal. Always eat your veggies.

Naturally carbonated Ginger Beer (₱170).

We love Ginger Beer. They brew their own concoction, and it felt like a natural bubbly with a good hint of ginger served in a flute glass for the drinker to enjoy the sizzles.

Truffled Cheese Sourdough Pizza (₱695)

We loved the taste of their sourdough pizza—chewy, thin layer with a nice end crust to enjoy. Best with simple toppings like truffled cheese served with a nice char.

Wine Braised Beef Cheeks, Squash Orzo (₱495). Vegetable Melange
Lechon & Gising Gising Bowl (₱380)
Black Pancit, Freshwater Shrimps, Tinapa Crumbs (₱545)
Shrimp, Salmon, Craft Adlai Risotto (₱620). Parmesan, Malunggay Oil

We asked for a tasting plate of their signature lunch dishes, and we loved their best selling lechon & gising gising, the braised cheeks and the salmon with adlai risotto. Note that the full serving size is good for one person, a good value given the quality of the dishes.

Crunchy Suman Ala Mode (₱185)

This fried suman topped with mango and served with vanilla ice cream has always been their signature dessert.

Calamansi Pie (₱195)

Check out the Calamansi Pie to refresh the palate and satisfy your sweet ending craving.

Moka Pot Late (₱170)

Their coffees are quite good—while you stay a while just to enjoy the view and the company. Make sure not to hurry back down to the city and take the time to enjoy the serenity of the place.

Final Thoughts

It was awesome to see Burrow Cafe successfully thriving in the pandemic more so now that Manila is opening up for dining and more diners are appreciating the concept of dining with nature and the destination restaurants so close to the metro. The pivot to focus more on al fresco dining and the partnership with Chef Danilo Puga made this cafe one of the hottest places, so hot that one has to reserve weeks prior to the visit to get a seat.

I love their sourdough pizza, braised beef cheeks, salmon with Adlai Risotto and their lineup of beverages from Santiago Craft Brewery, home-brewed ginger beer and their coffees. Budget about ₱1,500/head.

Make sure to reserve in advance and go on a weekday for a nice drive to Antipolo. Best to dine in for a lazy brunch with family and friends in a safe al fresco environment, and do take time to enjoy the surroundings.

Congratulations to Vitty and Marie for the pandemic success of Burrow Cafe!
