AzuThai is an authentic Thai restaurant in Makati that was established in 2008 by Chef J. Gamboa and Malu G. Lindo of the Milky Way family. In 2017, it became one of the first restaurants in the Philippines to be certified by the Royal Thai Government with the Thai SELECT Seal, which recognizes the authenticity of its Thai food and ingredients. AzuThai serves homestyle Thai cuisine prepared by its Thai chefs in an elegant setting that evokes the feeling of dining in a Thai home.

Azuthai Restaurant was awarded the Thai SELECT seal again, a testament to its consistency in delivering authentic Thai taste and ambiance.

ABOUT THAI SELECT

The Department of International Trade Promotion, Ministry of Commerce, the Royal Thai Government launched the “Thai SELECT” program to certify and promote authentic Thai cuisine around the world.

It is a seal of approval granted to Thai restaurants (both overseas and local Thai restaurants that serve authentic Thai food) and processed Thai food products. 

The objective is to give recognition to quality Thai restaurants and processed Thai food products as well as to encourage Thai restaurateurs and food producers to raise their quality while maintaining authenticity. 

A Thai SELECT restaurant uses only the best Thai ingredients, as verified by the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) of the Ministry of Commerce of the Royal Thai Government, with proof of receipts.

A Thai restaurant should only serve Thai cuisine and have Thai chefs in the kitchen.

This is because Thai cuisine is very specific and requires a deep understanding of the flavors and techniques used in Thai cooking. Thai chefs have been trained in these techniques and know how to use the freshest ingredients to create authentic Thai dishes.

Ambiance is also important in a Thai SELECT certified restaurant, and it should evoke the welcoming embrace of Thai hospitality.


AUTHENTIC THAI FOOD

AzuThai Appetizer Sampler
Prawn Spring Rolls, Fish Cakes, Vegetable Spring Rolls

This bite-sized sampler trio is served with a sweet and sour sauce and varying textures to keep your palate entertained before the next course.

Som Tam
Spicy Papaya Salad with Green Papaya, Long Beans, Tomato, Peanuts, Chili

Som Tam is a challenging dish to make because it requires the perfect balance of sweetness, spiciness, and saltiness, while still allowing the flavors of the vegetables to shine through. I was sitting next to the ambassador, and they commented on the authentic taste of the Som Tam.

Satay Gai
Grilled Chicken Skewers, Peanut Sauce, Cucumber Achar

The chicken satay was perfectly grilled, with just the right amount of peanut sauce, and was best enjoyed with a side of achar.

Tom Klong
Hot and Sour Soup with Fried Fish and Tamarind

This was a unique soup made specially for the occasion, a clear hot and sour soup with fried fish to give it a salty fish texture.

Massaman Gaeh
Lamb Curry with Shallots, Potatoes, Peanuts

Our all-time favorite dish at Azuthai is the Lamb Massaman Curry. We love the thick, flavorful curry sauce and how the lamb perfectly absorbs the flavor. It goes so well with white rice and a bottle of Thai beer.

Pla Naeng Ma Naw
Steamed Boneless Seabass, Lime, Sish Sauce, Garlic, Coriander

The apahap was fresh and steamed perfectly, resulting in moist and tender white flesh that was flavorful with the lime and Thai herb sauce. Sarap to the bones.

Poo Nim Phat Pong Karee
Soft Shell Crab with Yellow Curry, Sweet Peppers, Onions, Eggs, Coconut Milk

The soft-shell crab is one of the restaurant’s premium dishes. The umami of the crab pairs well with the flavors of the curry, which has a hint of spice and Thai herbs.

Moo Kra Prow
Stir-fried Pork with Basil and Chili

I love their minced pork with basil which cuts through the meatiness and a bit of chili spice. Best with white rice.

Tap Tim Krob | Water Chestnuts with Fresh Coconut Milk
Tako | Tapioca and Concept Cream in Pandan Cups

The Thai halo-halo version with water chestnuts that pop and fresh coconut milk for creaminess is always a delicious and refreshing dessert. Tako is also a perfect ending to a delicious Thai meal.


FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall, I am still amazed at how the Royal Thai Government is able to spread authentic Thai food through its Thai SELECT program around the world. A Thai food meal is satisfying, with balanced flavors that leave a smile on your face when executed correctly. We experienced first-hand Thai hospitality with the Thai ambassador, and we gained a better understanding of how they execute Thai hospitality by activating all five senses.
