SHANG PALACE: A Special Dragon Year Lauriat!

Shang Palace is one of our favorite Chinese Restaurants in Manila ever since our 6750 days working for a prestigious multinational company. It reopened last August with the revival of the Makati Shangri La hotel. It continues to be elegant as you walk in but not intimidating and the Chinese blood red motif gives you a good luck vibes.

We tried the special Dragon New Year Lauriat and here is what to expect at Shang Palace:

煙三文魚生撈起

Lo hei yu sheng
黄燜湯竹笙海鮮羹

Participating in the Chinese New Year ritual of mixing and tossing yusheng, 鱼生—a blend of thinly sliced raw fish and shredded vegetables—for good fortune has become an anticipated tradition. The higher you toss it, the better, and the messier, the more luck it is believed to bring. This enjoyable family bonding tradition should undoubtedly be a delightful taste experience.

Braised chicken soup with seafood and bamboo fungus
發財好市扣元蹄

This hot soup has a clean taste of chicken broth with selected seafood bits and bamboo fungus.

Dragon fruit cocktail for a Dragon New Year? I enjoyed it, but Rache did not.

Braised pork hock with dried oysters
港式蒸大海斑

Incredibly tender Pata Tim with a velvety, rich brown sauce and dried oysters, imparting a distinct umami flavor. It was nearly devoured and pairs exceptionally well with Machang/ rice.

Steamed fresh garoupa Hong Kong style
上湯焗大明蝦

The Garoupa tastes fresh and clean; enjoy it with a touch of the sauce.

Mei kwei soy sauce chicken
生炒腊味糯米飯

Sarap rin ng soy chicken. The chicken is sizable, featuring a generous portion of meat and a light soy sauce.

Baked king prawn in superior broth
玫瑰露豉油雞

Generous serving of prawns with broccoli in a flavorful, soupy broth.

Fried glutinous rice with preserved meat
陳皮紅豆沙湯圓

The best and most raved about dish by my wife who loves Machang.

Glutinous rice dumplings with red bean cream and dried tangerine peel
脆皮年椰汁糕

Love this dessert because it is something different, resembling our bilo-bilo but with a red bean sauce and mochi-like balls.

Coconut rice cake

The celebration concludes with a tasting service of tikoy for good luck!

FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall, I thoroughly enjoy a good Lauriat, especially this one celebrating the auspicious Year of the Wood Dragon which hits all the lucky notes during the dining experience. My personal favorite was the braised pork hock with dried oysters, while Rache loved the fried glutinous rice with preserved meat. It’s fantastic to commence the meal with the tossing of Lo Hei Yu Sheng for good luck and conclude it with tikoy and glutinous rice dumplings with red bean cream. Make sure to reserve the private rooms for a more intimate Chinese New Year celebration!
