I was pleasantly surprised to see Lanson Place Mall of Asia, Manila, celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year with traditional activities reminiscent of those in Binondo. I truly appreciate the dedication of the Lanson Place team in preserving and showcasing cultural traditions, fostering cross-cultural understanding and appreciation among both locals and expats.

Be sure to keep Lanson Place Mall of Asia in mind for your next Chinese celebrations in Manila!

The celebration began with an eye-dotting ceremony at the porte cochere, led by hotel executives Peggy Angeles, Executive Vice President of SM Hotels and Conventions Corp.; Nils Rothbarth, General Manager of Lanson Place Mall of Asia, Manila; and Angelica Vicencio, Director of Sales.

This symbolic ritual represents the awakening of the lion and the start of the new year.

I loved the traditional Lion and Dragon Dance, a vibrant way to welcome the New Year with good fortune while driving away bad luck. The dragons were playful, dancing to dynamic rhythms and engaging with the crowd, even posing for selfies and videos.

The performance began at 10:00 AM—perfect timing after breakfast at Cyan Modern Kitchen—creating a joyful and nostalgic atmosphere for everyone.

The performers skillfully bring the legendary creatures to life, captivating the audience with their synchronized movements to the rhythmic beat of the drums.

A key tradition in Chinese New Year celebrations, the dance symbolizes power, strength, and good fortune. Their energetic performance filled the atmosphere with joy and optimism for the year ahead.

Chinese New Year wouldn’t be complete without predictions for each Chinese Zodiac sign for the Year of the Wood Snake, shared by astrologer Jill Andrea Gepilano over tea and light snacks at Madeleine High Tea.

I don’t believe in these predictions, but sometimes it doesn’t hurt to be aware of them. For example, as a Tiger, I should focus on practical budgeting and saving this year while avoiding risky investments.

The highlight of the lunch buffet is the traditional Yee Sang Toss, a lively ritual symbolizing wealth and good fortune. Everyone joins in, tossing the vibrant raw fish salad as high and messily as possible while chanting for a prosperous New Year to attract more wealth.

The buffet is filled with symbols of luck, wealth, and prosperity, including trees adorned with ampao.

The Hong Kong roast meats were delicious, and I indulged in baked salmon and lamb biryani.

The kids had a great time with the chocolate coins and the Kung Fu master spreading good cheers to everyone.

It is best to stay overnight and catch the special fireworks for the Chinese New Year.
