KETTLE is a casual restaurant in the East Wing of Shangri-la Mall offering the yummiest comfort food by Chef Chiloy Santos. Its name is inspired by the classic kitchen container, symbolic of the resto being a “holder” for the different comfort food favorites from the 4 families that own the resto — Santos, Tenchavez, Meer and Tanjangco family.
These are the same families behind the successful Meat Plus in Subic, Tender Bob’s, and the newly opened Chef Samurai Japanese Resto (also in Subic).
Foodies have been raving about the Buttermilk Fried Chicken. Here are our other suggestions on what to order…
Kettle is simple, no frills, and makes good use of the mall area space outside the resto.
The place has a bistro cafe vibe inside.
It has these nice floor-to-ceiling glass panels, which allow you to see what’s happening inside the resto.
For a more private dining experience, you can reserve this area behind the resto.
KETTLE MENU: Soups & Appetizers | Salads & Sandwiches | Main Course | Pasta & Sides | Wine List | Beer List | Beverage & Desserts
SOUPS & APPETIZERS
✮ Oven Roasted Squash Soup (P249 +10% service charge). Shrimp Salad, Lemon Oil, Tarragon.
The pumpkin soup was good, with a thick consistency. You have to eat it fast though, because it gets cold quickly.
Clam Chowder (P229 +10% service charge). Served on a sourdough bread bowl.
We grew up loving clam chowder on a carved sourdough bread bowl just like this. Creamy and good while hot.
✮ Pork & Potato Strips (P339 +10% service charge). Crunchy Pork Belly and Fresh Potato Strips, Fried Herbs, Red Pepper, Aioli.
If you were to order an appetizer, make sure to order this. It’s like strips of chicharon with crispy fries and cheese on top.
SALADS
Kettle House Salad (P339 +10% service charge). Arugula Romaine Mix, Toffee Walnuts, Bacon, Manchego Cheese, Berry Balsamic Dressing.
The salad combinations are simple, and the greens aren’t as fresh as I would have liked. Just OK.
Smoked Salmon Salad (P259 +10% service charge). Mixed Greens, Norwegian Smoked Salmon, Cucumber, Cherry Tomatoes, Herbed Croutons, Dill Ranch Dressing.
You can order this salad with salmon for complete, healthy meal.
SANDWICHES
Half Pounder Angus Burger (P419 +10% service charge). Smoked White Cheddar, Caramelized Onions, Horseradish Dressing.
This burger was quite big and served with sweet potato fries.
My son Joshua joined us for a school assignment. He had to join Papa for work and help him in the office.
A bit hard to explain blogging as a profession, mainly because it’s quite unusual not to have a fixed office space.
Shrimp Po’Boy (P419 +10% service charge). Soft Ciabatta Roll, Cajun Breaded Shrimps, Remoulade, Emmental.
This one was just OK. The shrimp is fried with mustard sauce.
Kettle Grilled Four Cheese (P329 +10% service charge). English Loag, Gruyere/Fontina/Cheddar/Parmesan, Sweet Tomato Jam, Basil Crunch.
Kettle’s Grilled Cheese version of an American comfort food favorite. It would have been nice to have a more grilled flavor in the bread. I can still remember how good this Grilled Cheese was.
Truffle Gorgonzola (P289 +10% service charge). Spaghetti, Truffle Cream, Fried Basil, Parmesan.
This one has just the right amount of creaminess, cheesiness, and truffle flavor.
I love eating out with our Food Blogger friends in Manila because you get to try all the food and exchange opinions about what you’ve tried. It’s also a good time to catch up on online tsismis.
MAIN COURSES
✮ Australian Lamb Adobo (P449 +10% service charge). Slow Cooked Adobo Style, Tzasiki, Truffled Mushroom Brown Rice.
I love this Adobo version with tender lamb meat soaked in the adobo sauce, paired with brown rice with truffle and mushroom flavors.
Steak & Marrow (P2,589 +10% service charge). 450 gms USDA Prime Aged Ribeye Steak, Herbed Crushed Bone Marrow.
This is big enough for sharing for a group of 4-6 people. It’s a good chunk of meat with little fat on the sides, cooked medium or medium-well for the best flavor.
As they say, eating Bone Marrow is healthy!
✮ Buttermilk Fried Chicken (P519 +10% service charge). Honey Glazed Cornbread, Country Gravy, Cajun Honey.
But the star of Kettle is the crunchy fried chicken cooked in buttermilk, Southern-style…
…served with big corn bread a la Kenny Rogers and good for sharing with 2-3 people.
Joshua getting food blogging tips from Tito Spanx.
What makes this really good is the combination of the gravy and honey. Yummy! 🙂
Rosemary Garlic Chicken (P439 +10% service charge). Half All Natural Chicken, Oven Roasted Garlic and Potatoes (no added Steroids/Hormones).
For the health conscious, best to order this rosemary natural Chicken, cooked with herbs and garlic.
DRINKS
Order the Altas Cumbres Argentinian wine, which is light and refreshing with a bitter ending.
It’s a good wine to pair with the dishes and add a little spice to your dining experience.
✮ Altas Cumbres Torrontes 2013 (Glass – P199, Bottle – P999 +10% service charge).
Grape Variety: 100% Torrontes
Tasting Notes: Yellow colour with greenish nuances. Very intense aroma of fresh grapes, flower perfume and mature peaches. Fresh in the mouth. Light and easy to drink. Ideal with seafood, Thai and Chinese food.
Vineyard: Salta, Argentina
Lemon Iced Tea, Green Iced Tea, Peached Iced Tea (750 ml Garafe -P149 each +10% service charge).
You can also try the different iced teas. Go for the refreshing Green Iced Tea with cucumber.
Fresh Fruit Shake (P159 +10% service charge).
The mango shake tasted artificial. 🙁
Thanks to Chiloy Santos and his wife for hosting our Food Blogger Meet-up at Kettle! 🙂
DESSERTS
Of course, a good comfort restaurant isn’t complete without a really good selection of cakes, home-baked with love.
Manila Food Bloggers in action! I enjoy shooting with these guys! 🙂
Pineapple Upside Down Cake (P189 +10% service charge).
Love this pineapple cake — not too sweet and just the right combination of flavors.
Caramel Cake (P189 +10% service charge).
Light and soft caramel cake. 🙂
Banana Cream Pie (P149 +10% service charge).
This was just OK. I don’t really appreciate desserts with cream topping.
✮ Checkered Cake (P209 +10% service charge).
A simple yet quite unique cake — alternating box layers of chocolate chifon and red velvet. 🙂
Pistachio Cake (P229 +10% service charge).
This pistachio cake was good, too! 🙂
Peach Trifle (P269 +10% service charge).
Never really enjoyed trifle cakes that much.
Thank you to our Food Blogger friends for the nice lunch meet up at Kettle!
Overall, we love Kettle for its extensive selection of yummy comfort food. 🙂
Don’t forget to order the Pork & Potato Strips, Australian Lamb Adobo, Buttermilk Fried Chicken, and Checkered Cake.
For drinks, skip the tea and fruit shakes and just order a glass of Altas Cumbres Torrontes.
Budget is about P800/head.
